# What is a follow gate on Instagram?

A follow gate is a DM automation step that checks whether someone follows your account before it sends what they asked for. If they follow, the link goes out. If not, the DM asks them to follow first. In ReplyRep this is Follow-Gated DMs, on Lite and up, so every launch grows the account as well as the click count.

## How does a follow gate work?

Someone comments your keyword. Before the link goes out, the automation checks whether they follow you. Because Meta allows only one [private reply](https://replyrep.io/glossary/private-reply) per comment until the person responds, a follow gate usually runs as a short exchange: the first DM asks for the follow, and the link follows once they reply or tap a button.

## What does a follow-gated DM look like?

**Follow gate**
- Comment keyword: RECIPE
- Public reply: Sent, check your DMs
- DM: The full recipe is for followers. Follow @yourbrand, then tap below and it's yours.
- Follow up: You're in. Here's the recipe: yourbrand.com/recipe

## Why does a follow gate matter?

Without one, a reel can send thousands of people your link and leave you with no lasting connection to most of them. With one, the people who wanted your freebie also become followers who see your next post. Use it for things worth a follow, like a recipe, guide or template. For a simple price question, a gate adds friction for no reason.

> **Say it upfront** Write "followers get the link" in the caption so nobody feels tricked when the DM asks for the follow.

## How does ReplyRep handle follow gates?

Follow-Gated DMs are included on Lite, Boost and MAX. They work with any [comment-to-DM](https://replyrep.io/glossary/comment-to-dm) automation and pair well with a [lead magnet](https://replyrep.io/glossary/lead-magnet). See [follow to get the link](https://replyrep.io/features/follow-to-get-link) for the feature, copy the [follow-gate templates](https://replyrep.io/templates/follow-gate), or read [how to grow followers with follow-gated DMs](https://replyrep.io/guides/how-to-grow-followers-with-follow-gated-dms).

**Turn every freebie into a follower** Follow-Gated DMs start on Lite at $10 a month.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is a follow gate allowed on Instagram?

Asking people to follow before you send a freebie is a common practice. What matters is how the DMs are sent: through Meta's official API, one private reply per comment, and further messages only after the person responds. Be clear in the caption that the link is for followers.

### Does a follow gate reduce how many people get the link?

It can, because some people won't follow. In return, the people who do follow stay reachable for your next post. Use it for content worth a follow and skip it for quick questions like price or shipping.

### What happens if someone already follows me?

The check passes and they get the link straight away, with no extra step. Only people who don't follow you yet are asked to follow first, so your existing audience never feels gated.

### Which ReplyRep plans include follow-gated DMs?

Follow-Gated DMs are on Lite, Boost and MAX. The Free plan includes comment-to-DM automation with 2,000 DMs a month, but not the follow check, so you can test keyword DMs before adding the gate.
