# What is the Instagram Graph API?

The Instagram Graph API is the common name for Meta's official Instagram Platform: the APIs apps use to work with Instagram professional accounts, including media, comments and messages. Meta now documents it as the Instagram API with Instagram Login or with Facebook Login. DM tools built on it, like ReplyRep, connect through Meta's login and never ask for your password.

## How does the Instagram Graph API work?

You log in with Instagram (or Facebook) and approve the permissions an app asks for. Meta then gives the app access to your [professional account](https://replyrep.io/glossary/instagram-professional-account) through its API, and sends it webhooks when something happens, such as a new comment or DM. An app that serves accounts its developer doesn't own needs Meta's **Advanced Access**, which requires App Review and Business Verification.

## What are the two setups?

*From Meta's Instagram Platform overview, October 2026.*

| | Instagram API with Instagram Login | Instagram API with Facebook Login |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Facebook Page | Not required | Required |
| Messaging | Supported | Supported through Messenger Platform |
| Account type | Professional (business or creator) | Professional (business or creator) |

## Why does the official API matter for DM automation?

Instagram's Terms of Use forbid accessing or collecting information in an automated way without permission, and forbid collecting other users' passwords. Meta's Platform Terms say apps must not separately request a user's login credentials. Tools that ask for your password work outside all of that. The official API also enforces the rules that keep automation fair: the person must message first, one [private reply](https://replyrep.io/glossary/private-reply) per comment, and published [rate limits](https://replyrep.io/glossary/rate-limit).

## How does ReplyRep use the Instagram Graph API?

ReplyRep is a Meta Business Partner built on the official API. You connect with Meta's login, it never asks for your password, and setup takes about four minutes. ## Frequently asked questions

### What is Advanced Access on the Instagram API?

It is the access level Meta requires when an app serves Instagram professional accounts its developer does not own or manage. Getting it requires App Review and Business Verification, which is why public DM tools go through Meta's review before they can connect your account.

### Does the Instagram Graph API work with personal accounts?

No. Meta says app users must have an Instagram professional account, which can represent a business or a creator. Switching a personal account to a professional one is done in the Instagram app's settings.

### Do I need a Facebook Page to use the Instagram API?

Not with the Instagram API with Instagram Login, which Meta says serves professional accounts without a linked Facebook Page and supports messaging. The Facebook Login setup does require the account to be connected to a Page.

### How can I tell if a tool uses the official API?

An official tool sends you to Instagram's or Facebook's own login screen and asks you to approve permissions. It never asks you to type your Instagram password into its own website or app.
