# What is a private reply on Instagram?

A private reply is a direct message a business sends to someone in response to their comment, using Meta's Private Replies API. Meta allows one private reply per comment, sent within 7 days of the comment on posts, reels and ads, and only during the broadcast for Live. It is the official mechanism behind every comment-to-DM tool, including ReplyRep.

## How does a private reply work?

The app learns about a new comment from Instagram, then sends a message addressed to that comment rather than to the person. Instagram delivers it as a DM. Meta supports private replies on comments on a professional account's posts, reels, stories, Live and ad posts. These are the rules Meta publishes:

## What does a private reply look like in practice?

Someone comments PRICE under your reel on Monday. About three seconds later they get: "The linen set is $68 and ships in two days: yourbrand.com/linen. Want your size checked first?" If they answer "do you ship to Canada?", the 24-hour [messaging window](https://replyrep.io/glossary/messaging-window) opens and the conversation can continue. If an app tried to reply to that comment eight days later, Meta's 7-day limit would block it.

## Why do private replies matter for DM automation?

Meta requires the person to start any conversation with a business. The private reply is what lets a comment count as that start. The one-message rule is also why the first DM has to carry everything: the link, the code, and a reason to reply.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I send more than one private reply to the same comment?

No. Meta allows only one message to the person who commented. You can send more only after they respond, and those messages must go out within 24 hours of their response. Plan the first DM so it delivers what they asked for and invites a reply.

### Do private replies expire?

Yes. For comments on posts, reels and ads, Meta requires the private reply within 7 days of when the comment was made. For Instagram Live, private replies can only be sent while the broadcast is live and stop as soon as it ends.

### Where does a private reply show up for the commenter?

In their main inbox if they follow your professional account, and in their Requests folder if they don't. Meta also attaches a link to the post they commented on, so they can see why they received the message.

### Is a private reply the same as a public comment reply?

No. A private reply is a DM only the commenter sees. A public reply is a comment under theirs that everyone can read. Many accounts use both: a short public reply such as 'sent, check your DMs' and the private reply with the link.
