# How to grow Instagram followers with DM automation

Use a follow-gated DM: someone comments your keyword, the automation checks whether they follow you, and the link only goes out once they do. In ReplyRep this is Follow-Gated DMs, on Lite and up. It turns people who found one post into followers who see the next one. Gate freebies, not purchases, and be upfront that following is the price.

## How does DM automation grow followers?

Reels and shared posts reach people who do not follow you. They comment, get the link and leave, and you never reach them again. A **follow gate** adds one condition to the comment to DM flow: follow first, then get the link. Every post that travels brings followers, not just clicks.

1. Someone comments your keyword on a post or reel.
2. The automation checks whether they follow you.
3. If they already follow, the link goes out straight away.
4. If they do not, the DM asks them to follow first, and they get the link once they have.

One Meta rule shapes every follow gate in every tool: a comment earns one private reply, and further messages are only allowed once the person responds, within 24 hours of their response. So the person has to answer the first DM before the link can arrive. Write the DM so answering is obvious and easy.

## When should you gate a link behind a follow?

| Gate it | Do not gate it |
| --- | --- |
| Free guides, templates and checklists | Product links for people ready to buy |
| Recipes, workout plans, presets | Booking links for paying clients |
| Giveaway entries | Answers to customer service questions |
| Content that is part of a series | Ad comments, where you already paid for the attention |

The rule of thumb: gate the free thing people would happily trade a follow for. Never gate the link that makes you money. A buyer who has to follow first is a buyer with one more step to leave.

## What happens to people who already follow you?

They pass straight through. The check runs first, and anyone who already follows gets the link in the first DM, with no ask at all. That matters for two reasons. Your existing audience, the people most likely to buy from you later, never meets friction. And the private reply to a follower arrives in their main inbox, while the ask to a non-follower lands in Requests, as Meta's documentation describes.

So a follow gate only costs effort for the people it is meant for: newcomers who found one post and have not decided about the account yet. For them, following is a small trade for something useful, made at the moment they are most interested.

## What do you need before setting up a follow gate?

- An Instagram professional account connected through the official API.
- A ReplyRep plan that includes [Follow-Gated DMs](https://replyrep.io/features/follow-to-get-link): Lite and up, from $10 a month.
- A freebie worth a follow. If it would not make you follow a stranger, it will not work.
- A content plan. A follow is only worth something if the next posts give people a reason to stay.

## How do you set up a follow-gated DM in ReplyRep?

1. **Set up comment to DM as normal.** Choose the post, add the keyword, write the DM with the link. The [comment to DM guide](https://replyrep.io/guides/how-to-set-up-comment-to-dm) covers this.
2. **Switch on the follow check.** Turn on Follow-Gated DMs for that automation. Followers get the link immediately. Everyone else is asked to follow first.
3. **Write the follow ask.** Say what they get, that it is for followers, and exactly what to do next. Friendly, one sentence, no guilt.
4. **Say it in the caption too.** "Follow and comment GUIDE for the template." Nobody should discover the condition only after they comment.
5. **Test both paths.** Comment from an account that follows you and from one that does not. The follower should get the link. The other should get the ask, then the link after following.

## How do you write a follow ask that works?

- **Lead with the thing.** "Here's how to get the preset" before "follow me".
- **Give a reason to stay.** "There's a new one every Friday" turns a toll into a subscription.
- **Make the next step obvious.** Follow, then reply or tap, so the conversation is open for the link.
- **Keep it warm.** No guilt, no "only real fans". A follow is a favor.
- **Match the caption.** The DM should confirm the condition people already read, not introduce it.

What not to write: long explanations of why you need followers, threats that the link expires, or anything implying they will miss out forever. Pressure gets a follow and an unfollow the next day.

## Worked example: a weekly presets drop

A photographer gives away a free Lightroom preset with each reel. The preset is the reason to follow, because a new one comes every week.

**Follow-gated freebie**
- Comment keyword: PRESET
- Public reply: Sent, check your DMs (or Requests)
- DM: Hey {first_name}, the presets are for followers, and there's a new one every Friday. Tap follow on my profile, then come back here and I'll send this week's straight over.
- Follow up: You're in. Here's the preset: / {link} / / Next one drops Friday.

Results vary by audience and offer, and we only quote what customers have confirmed. One ReplyRep customer, @dropship.dispatch, reports: 34K new followers in 60 days.

**Turn your next reel into followers** Follow-Gated DMs are on Lite and up. Start free and upgrade when you are ready to gate.

## Why is my follow gate not working?

- **The ask is in Requests.** The people you are gating do not follow you yet, and Meta delivers private replies to non-followers in the Requests folder. Say "check Requests" in the public reply and caption.
- **They followed but did not answer the DM.** Meta allows one private reply until the person responds. Make the next step explicit: follow, then reply or tap.
- **They answered more than 24 hours later.** Meta's window after a response is 24 hours. If the conversation lapsed, they can comment the keyword again on a recent post.
- **People are annoyed.** The condition was hidden. Put it in the caption so the ask is no surprise.
- **Followers leave after getting the link.** The freebie attracted people with no interest in the rest of your content. Tie the gate to what you post every week.

> **Do not buy or force follows** Meta's spam rules ban behavior "designed to deceive, mislead, or overwhelm users in order to artificially increase viewership". A follow gate works because the person chooses to trade a follow for something real. Deliver what you promised, every time.

## How do you know if a follow gate is working?

- **Followers gained per gated post.** Compare with a similar post without a gate.
- **Completion rate.** Of the people asked to follow, how many reached the link. A low rate means the ask is unclear or the freebie is not worth it.
- **Retention after 30 days.** Whether the new followers still like and comment a month later.
- **Clicks on the link.** A gate that adds followers but halves the clicks may cost more than it earns.

## Tips for follow gates that grow the right audience

- Gate one post in three, not every post. Your existing followers pass straight through, but newcomers who meet a gate on every post tire of it.
- Pair the gate with an email ask on your best freebie: see [how to collect emails from Instagram](https://replyrep.io/guides/how-to-collect-emails-from-instagram).
- Track followers gained per gated post against similar ungated posts, so you know what the gate is worth.
- For giveaways, combine the gate with a clear entry rule: see [Instagram giveaways](https://replyrep.io/use-cases/instagram-giveaways).

## Frequently asked questions

### Is a follow gate allowed on Instagram?

Asking people to follow before you send a freebie is a normal marketing ask, and the automation runs on Meta's official private replies API. What breaks Meta's rules is deception: hiding the condition, not delivering, or inflating follows artificially. Be upfront and deliver.

### How does the automation know if someone follows me?

ReplyRep checks whether the person follows you before the link goes out, using the access you approved on Instagram's own screen when you connected. Nobody's password is involved, yours or theirs.

### Will people unfollow after they get the link?

Some will. The ones who stay are those who like the next posts. Gate freebies that belong to a series, like a weekly preset or recipe, and the follow keeps paying off.

### Do follow-gated DMs work on the free plan?

No. In ReplyRep, Follow-Gated DMs are on Lite and up, starting at $10 a month. The free plan sends the link to everyone who comments the keyword, follower or not.

### Should I gate links in ads?

Usually not. You paid to reach the person, so adding a step before the link costs you clicks you already bought. Send the link straight away and win the follow with your content.

### Why do non-followers say they never got my DM?

Meta delivers private replies to people who do not follow you into their Requests folder, not their main inbox. Many people never check it. Mention Requests in your public reply and caption.
