# How to set up comment to DM on Instagram, step by step

Connect your Instagram professional account to ReplyRep, open the post or reel, add a keyword such as GUIDE, write the DM with your link, and comment the keyword from a second account to test. Everyone who comments that word gets the DM about three seconds later. Meta allows one DM per comment, within 7 days of the comment.

## How does comment to DM work on Instagram?

[Comment to DM](https://replyrep.io/features/instagram-comment-to-dm) uses a Meta feature called a **private reply**: a business can answer a comment on its post with a direct message to the person who wrote it. Your tool watches the comments, checks each one for your keyword, and sends the matching ones your DM. Meta allows exactly one private reply per comment, and it must be sent within 7 days of the comment being made.

Two details from Meta's documentation matter for setup. The DM lands in the commenter's main inbox if they follow you, and in their Requests folder if they do not. And the private reply carries a link to the post they commented on, so they know why you are messaging.

## What do you need before you set it up?

- An Instagram professional account (business or creator). Personal accounts cannot use the API.
- A tool on Meta's official API that connects through Instagram's own approval screen. ReplyRep uses Instagram Login, so no Facebook Page is required.
- The link you want to send, already working. Open it on your phone first.
- A second Instagram account for testing, or a friend willing to comment.

## How do you choose the right keyword?

The keyword is the whole interface, so it decides how many people make it through. Good keywords share four traits.

- **One word.** GUIDE beats "send me the guide". Every extra word is a chance to mistype.
- **Obviously connected to the offer.** RECIPE for a recipe, PLAN for a workout plan, CODE for a discount. People guess right without rereading the caption.
- **Not a word people use anyway.** "Love" or "yes" will fire on compliments. Pick something people only type when they want the thing.
- **Easy on a phone keyboard.** Avoid words autocorrect likes to change.

If you are stuck, ReplyRep's AI-generated triggers (on every plan) suggest keywords for a post, and our list of [the best Instagram comment keywords](https://replyrep.io/guides/best-instagram-comment-keywords) groups proven ones by goal.

## How do you set up comment to DM in ReplyRep?

1. **Connect Instagram.** Sign in to ReplyRep, choose Instagram and approve access on Instagram's screen. ReplyRep never asks for your password. Setup takes about four minutes.
2. **Choose the post.** Pick a published post or reel, or set it up on one you have not published yet (every plan). Setting it up first means the comments that arrive in the first minutes, usually the busiest, are answered.
3. **Add the keyword.** Type the word. People will write it every way: "guide", "Guide", "GUIDE please". Your test in step 6 should cover each of those, so you know exactly which comments fire.
4. **Write the DM.** Use their first name, say in one line what they are getting, and put the link on its own line. Under 300 characters is a good target.
5. **Decide on extras.** Optional: a public reply under each comment (Lite and up), a follow check before the link (Lite and up), or an email request before the link (Lite and up). Each is a switch.
6. **Test from a second account.** Comment the keyword on its own, the keyword in a sentence, a misspelling and an unrelated comment. Note which ones get the DM, then open the link from the DM itself.
7. **Tell people in the post.** Say the keyword in the caption's first line, on screen in the reel, and in a pinned comment.

In any tool, the order is the same: connect, scope to a post, keyword, message, test, announce. Tools differ on matching (capitals, extra words around the keyword), so test the variations people will really type, and if your tool needs the word on its own, say so in the caption.

## Should the keyword be on one post or the whole account?

| | Post keyword | Global Trigger |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Where it fires | Comments on one post or reel | Every post, reel, story and DM |
| Best for | The freebie or link in that post | Questions people ask everywhere: price, shipping, booking |
| How many you get | Unlimited on every plan | 5 on Free, 20 on Lite, 50 on Boost, 500 on MAX |
| Tracking | Clicks map to one post | Clicks map to one question |

Use a post keyword whenever the DM belongs to that post. Use a [Global Trigger](https://replyrep.io/features/global-keyword-triggers) for answers that never change. If both could match one comment, keep the words distinct so you always know which DM someone got.

## What makes a good comment to DM message?

- **The first line is the answer.** The notification preview shows it, so "Here's the budget template" beats "Hey there!".
- **The link sits on its own line.** It is easier to tap and easier to spot.
- **One instruction, at most.** The single step people get stuck on, such as making a copy of a template.
- **It sounds like you.** Read it aloud. If you would not say it to a friend, rewrite it.
- **A question at the end, if you want a conversation.** Meta allows more messages once the person replies, within 24 hours of their reply.

## Worked example: a free budgeting template

A personal finance creator posts a carousel on a monthly budget and offers the spreadsheet. Caption, first line: "Comment BUDGET and I'll DM you the template." The automation:

**Carousel freebie**
- Comment keyword: BUDGET
- Public reply: Just sent it, check your DMs (or Requests)
- DM: Hey {first_name}, here's the budget template: / {link} / / Make a copy first (File, Make a copy) so you can edit it.

The public reply mentions Requests because many commenters on a carousel that travels will not follow yet. The DM includes the one instruction people always get stuck on. For delivering files like this at volume, see [how to deliver a lead magnet on Instagram](https://replyrep.io/guides/how-to-deliver-a-lead-magnet-on-instagram).

**Set up comment to DM on your next post** Free for 2,000 DMs a month, on posts, reels and stories.

## Why is my comment to DM not working?

*Common problems and fixes*

| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Commenter says no DM arrived | It went to Requests, because they do not follow you | Ask them to check Requests. Mention it in the public reply |
| Nothing fires for anyone | Keyword set on a different post, or automation paused | Open the post in the dashboard and check the trigger is on |
| Some comments miss | Misspellings, or the word inside another word | Pick a keyword that is hard to misspell. Add a common variant |
| Old comments never got a DM | Meta only allows a private reply within 7 days of the comment | Nothing to fix. Turn automation on before posting next time |
| Someone commented twice and got one DM | The keyword fired on the first comment. Each comment can get one private reply | Expected behavior. They already have the link |
| DMs stopped mid-spike | Monthly allowance used up, or Meta's rate limit reached | Check usage. See the viral post guide |

> **One DM per comment, then wait for them** Meta allows one private reply per comment. Any further message is only allowed after the person replies, and within 24 hours of that reply. Design the DM so the link is in the first message, not saved for a second one.

## Tips once it is running

- Keep the automation on. Good posts get comments for weeks, and the trigger keeps answering as long as they arrive.
- Use a different keyword per post if you want to see which post drove which clicks.
- Tag the link with UTM parameters so your analytics shows Instagram DM as the source. More in [measuring Instagram DM conversions](https://replyrep.io/guides/measure-instagram-dm-conversions).
- If a post starts to spike, read [how to handle a viral Instagram post](https://replyrep.io/guides/how-to-handle-a-viral-instagram-post).

## Frequently asked questions

### Does comment to DM work on reels?

Yes. Meta's private replies work on comments on posts, reels, stories, Live and ads. ReplyRep automates posts, reels, stories and ad comments, but not Live. Reels are usually where most of the comments come from, because they reach people who do not follow you yet.

### Does the keyword have to be the whole comment?

It depends on the tool, so test it. Comment the word on its own and inside a sentence, such as GUIDE please, from a second account and see which fire. Then write the caption to match: if only the bare word works, ask people to comment just that word.

### Can I use more than one keyword on a post?

Yes, and keywords on a single post are unlimited on every ReplyRep plan. Most posts work best with one, though. Two keywords split attention and make the caption harder to follow.

### How long does a comment to DM automation keep working?

As long as you leave it on. Each new comment gets its DM within seconds. The only time limit is Meta's: a comment must be answered within 7 days of being made, which automation handles automatically.

### Can I set up comment to DM before I post?

Yes. ReplyRep lets you add the automation to a post before you publish it, on every plan. That way the first comments, which often arrive in the first few minutes, get their DM too.

### What happens if someone comments the keyword twice?

Each comment can receive one private reply under Meta's rules. They already have the link from their first comment, so a second DM would add nothing. You can still answer them by hand if they had a question.
