# How to build an Instagram DM funnel, stage by stage

An Instagram DM funnel turns a post into a sale through private messages: a reel or post asks for a keyword comment, an automated DM delivers something useful, a question invites a reply, the reply opens room for an offer and a follow up, and the email you capture keeps the relationship going. Each stage has one job and one number to watch.

## What is an Instagram DM funnel?

A [DM funnel](https://replyrep.io/glossary/dm-funnel) is the path from someone seeing your content to buying, with the private conversation in the middle. Instead of sending people to a link in bio and hoping, you ask them to comment a keyword, then the conversation happens in their inbox, where you can deliver, qualify and sell one person at a time, automatically.

It works on Instagram because of how Meta's messaging rules are set up. A business cannot message someone who has not interacted first, but a comment lets you send one private reply. Everything after that depends on the person replying. Build the funnel around those two facts and it stays both effective and within the rules.

## What are the stages of an Instagram DM funnel?

1. **Attention: the post.** A reel, carousel or ad that gives value and ends with "comment KEYWORD for X". Reels reach non-followers, so they usually feed the top of the funnel.
2. **Trigger: the keyword comment.** The viewer comments the keyword. This is the opt-in: they asked for the message. A public reply under the comment shows others that the DM arrives.
3. **Delivery: the first DM.** One private reply with the thing they asked for. Meta allows one message per comment, sent within 7 days of the comment, so this message has to deliver and invite a reply in one go.
4. **Engagement: the reply.** A question, a button or an email request. When the person answers, the conversation opens and you have 24 hours from their reply to continue.
5. **Offer: the next step.** The paid product, the call, the waitlist. Matched to what they told you, sent while the conversation is open.
6. **Follow up: the nudge.** A short second message for people who engaged but did not act, inside the 24-hour window after their last reply.
7. **Retention: the email list.** The email captured in stage four goes to Klaviyo, Mailchimp, HubSpot or Google Sheets, so you can reach them later without a new comment.

> **Why the reply matters so much** Without a reply, the funnel ends at the first DM. Meta's rule is that follow-up messages can only be sent if the recipient responds, within 24 hours of the response. Design stage three to earn that reply.

## Which ReplyRep feature runs each stage?

| Stage | What runs it | Plan |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Attention | Automate posts before you publish them, so the funnel is live the moment the reel goes up | every plan |
| Trigger | Comment Auto Reply under each keyword comment | Lite and up |
| Delivery | [Comment to DM](https://replyrep.io/features/instagram-comment-to-dm), plus [Follow-Gated DMs](https://replyrep.io/features/follow-to-get-link) if you want the follow first | every plan (follow gate: Lite and up) |
| Engagement | [Email Collector](https://replyrep.io/features/instagram-email-collector) or [DM flows](https://replyrep.io/features/instagram-dm-flows) with buttons and branches | Lite and up for Email Collector |
| Offer | Suggest More, after the first link | Lite and up |
| Follow up | [Follow Up](https://replyrep.io/features/instagram-dm-follow-up) | Lite and up |
| Retention | Email export as CSV or sync to Klaviyo, Mailchimp, HubSpot or Google Sheets | Lite and up |

## A worked example with assumed numbers

> **Every number in this section is an assumption** These figures are made up to show the arithmetic. They are not benchmarks, not industry averages and not ReplyRep results. Replace each one with your own data after your first campaign.

A fitness coach posts a reel: "Comment PLAN for my free 4-week beginner plan." The paid offer is a $49 12-week program. Here is how the funnel could play out, stage by stage, using assumed rates.

*Illustrative funnel. All rates are assumptions for the example.*

| Stage | Assumed rate | People |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Keyword comments on the reel | Starting number | 1,000 |
| First DM delivered (one per comment) | 100% of comments | 1,000 |
| Reply with an email address | Assume 40% | 400 |
| Open the plan link | Assume 60% of all DM recipients | 600 |
| Tap the program link in the follow up | Assume 15% of email givers | 60 |
| Buy the $49 program | Assume 20% of those who tapped | 12 |
| Revenue | 12 x $49 | $588 |

What the example shows is where to look. If 1,000 people commented and only 12 bought, the leak is visible stage by stage: was it the email step, the link, or the offer? DM volume matters for cost too: about 1,000 first DMs plus follow ups fits inside the free plan's 2,000 DMs a month. ## Which DM funnel fits your offer?

Not every business needs all seven stages. The price and complexity of the offer decide how much conversation sits between the comment and the sale. A cheap, obvious product can go straight from delivery to checkout. A high-ticket service needs qualifying questions first.

| Offer | Funnel shape | Middle step |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Low-priced product | Comment, DM with link and code, checkout | None, or a code reminder after a reply |
| Digital product or course | Comment, free lesson, email, offer | Email capture, then a sales email sequence |
| Coaching or service | Comment, resource, qualifying question, call booking | One or two questions in a branching flow |
| Physical drop or launch | Comment, waitlist email, launch-day link | Email list, since the drop may be weeks away |
| Local business | Comment or story reply, booking link | Booking page answers the rest |

If you are unsure, start with the shortest version that could work. You can add a question or an email step once you see where people stop.

## What does each DM in the funnel say?

**Stage 3: delivery with a question**
- Comment keyword: PLAN
- Public reply: Sent, check your DMs
- DM: Here's week 1 of the beginner plan: yoursite.com/week1 / Want all 4 weeks as a printable PDF? Reply with your email and I'll send it.

**Stage 5: offer after the email**
- DM: Done, check your inbox. / If you want the full 12-week version with check-ins, it's $49 here: yoursite.com/program

**Stage 6: follow up inside 24 hours**
- DM: Quick one: most people start the plan on Monday. Want a reminder of where to begin?

## How do you measure a DM funnel?

Give every link in the funnel a UTM tag so your analytics can tell DM traffic apart from bio traffic, and use a unique code per campaign when you sell. The full method, including formulas for email capture rate and DM-to-sale rate, is in [how to measure Instagram DM conversions](https://replyrep.io/guides/measure-instagram-dm-conversions).

**Build the first stage today** Connect Instagram in about four minutes, set a keyword and a first DM, and add the later stages when you are ready.

## Common mistakes that break a DM funnel

- **Selling in the first DM.** The person asked for something free. Deliver it, then offer.
- **No reason to reply.** Without a question or a choice, you never get past stage three.
- **Planning a sequence of DMs to non-responders.** Meta does not allow it after a comment. Put that sequence in email instead.
- **Untagged links.** If you cannot see which sales came from the DM, you cannot improve it.
- **One funnel for every post.** A recipe reel and a product reel need different keywords and offers.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is a DM funnel on Instagram?

It is a sales path that runs through private messages. A post asks people to comment a keyword, an automated DM delivers something useful, and the conversation that follows leads to an offer, a booking or an email signup, instead of sending everyone to a link in bio.

### How many messages can I send in an Instagram DM funnel?

After a comment, one private reply. Once the person responds, you can keep the conversation going within 24 hours of their latest reply. There is no fixed cap on messages inside an open conversation, but each one should be useful or people will stop replying.

### Do I need a flow builder for a DM funnel?

Not for a simple funnel. A keyword, one DM with a question and an email request cover most lead magnet and product funnels. Branching flows help when you need to qualify people, for example sending beginners and advanced clients to different offers.

### What is a good conversion rate for an Instagram DM funnel?

It varies too much by niche, offer and price to give one figure, and we do not publish industry benchmarks. Measure your own baseline on the first campaign, then improve one stage at a time against that baseline.

### Can I run a DM funnel from Instagram ads?

Yes. Meta's private replies work on comments on ad posts as well as organic posts and reels, so a keyword in the ad copy can start the same funnel. Comments on ads often ask about price and shipping, so cover those with keywords too.
