Instagram discount code DM templates that get used

A discount code DM template puts the code on its own line, links straight to the product it applies to and states the expiry. That is all it needs. Below are 10 templates for shops, creators with brand codes, coaches, local businesses and agencies, each with a comment keyword and a reminder follow up sent before the code runs out.

What makes a discount code DM work?

People who comment CODE are close to buying. The DM should make paying easy: code, link, deadline. The play is covered end to end in the discount codes use case.

  • Code on its own line so it can be long-pressed and copied.
  • Link to the product, not the homepage.
  • State the terms the code really has: amount, expiry, minimum spend.
  • One reminder before expiry recovers people who meant to buy and forgot.

Under ads, ad comment automation answers "how much?" with the price, the link and a code while the shopper is still on the ad.

How do you adapt these templates?

  1. Use a code that only appears in this DM so redemptions tell you what Instagram is worth.
  2. Match the numbers to the code. If the code gives 15%, the DM says 15%.
  3. Swap the link per post so each code lands on the product it was shown with.
  4. Retire old codes. Old posts keep firing, so update or remove expired codes.
  5. Test it. Test every template from a second account before the post goes live. Setup takes about four minutes, and a test comment shows you exactly what a follower will see.

For Shopify stores, Instagram DM automation for Shopify covers tracking codes and links in your shop analytics.

Which caption call to action goes with these DMs?

  • "Comment CODE and I'll DM you 15% off."
  • "Comment PRICE for the price and a first-order code."
  • "Comment DEAL for two-for-one mains this month."

Put the size of the discount in the caption, because it is the reason to comment. Keep the code itself for the DM. For a code that should work everywhere, set the keyword as a Global Trigger. Thank-you codes for story mentions are in the story reply templates.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Put the size of the discount in the caption and the code in the DM. The caption gets people to comment, the DM makes the code feel earned, and the comment itself helps the post reach more people.

Edit or switch off the automation on old posts when the code expires, or use a long-running code for evergreen posts and short codes for campaigns. Posts keep getting comments for months, so check them.

The DM sends the text you write, so everyone receives the same code. For single-use codes, collect the email first and let your email tool issue unique codes, or set a usage cap on the shared code.

Whatever you can afford to give everyone who asks. Many shops use 10 to 15% for first orders and save bigger numbers for launches. The DM converts because it is fast and specific, not only because of the size of the discount.
