What is Instagram comment to DM?
Comment to DM turns the most common caption on Instagram, "comment LINK and I'll send it to you", into something that actually happens without you. You pick a keyword, you write the message, and every comment containing that keyword triggers a private DM to the person who wrote it. Their first name is filled in, your words go out exactly as you wrote them, and the link lands where they were already typing.
The difference from answering by hand is timing. Reach on a reel often peaks while you are asleep or filming the next thing. Comment to DM answers about three seconds after the comment, at 2am or at 2pm, for as long as the post keeps moving. Comments that don't contain the keyword, like "this looks unreal", are left alone, so you are never messaging people who didn't ask.
If you want the full picture of what can be automated on Instagram, start with the Instagram DM automation guide. This page is about the comment trigger itself.
How does comment to DM work?
- 1
You set a keyword on a post or reel
Pick a word that is easy to type and hard to use by accident: GUIDE, RECIPE, DROP. Keywords on a single post are unlimited on every plan.
- 2
Someone comments it
ReplyRep watches the comments on that post through Meta's official Instagram API. A comment containing the keyword is a match; every other comment is ignored.
- 3
The DM goes out
Your message, with their first name and your link, lands in their inbox about three seconds after they commented.
- 4
Optional extras run
On paid plans you can also reply publicly under the comment, check they follow you first, ask for their email, or send a follow up later. Each one is a switch, not a requirement.
What does a comment to DM automation look like?
Here is a complete one for a recipe creator. The caption says "Comment RECIPE and I'll DM you the full method". Everything below is what the commenter sees.
Public reply
Sent it your way, check your DMs
DM
Hey {first_name}, here's the full method for the 20 minute sourdough focaccia 👇 yourbrand.com/focaccia Save it before you lose it. Tell me how yours turns out.
Follow up
Did the focaccia rise for you? If it didn't, the troubleshooting section is right under the method.
Three things make that work. The keyword matches the caption exactly, so nobody has to guess. The DM opens with their name and gets to the link in the first line. And it ends with an invitation to reply, which turns a one-way delivery into a conversation. For more wording ideas, see Instagram DM copy that converts and the lead magnet templates.
When should you use comment to DM?
- Creators with a free resource. "Comment GUIDE" on a carousel, and the PDF arrives by DM. This is the classic lead magnet delivery setup.
- Ecommerce drops. "Comment DROP for early access" on the teaser reel, then send the product page and a launch code when it goes live.
- Coaches filling a webinar. "Comment SEAT" and the registration link goes out, while the reel is still being watched.
- Affiliate creators. "Comment LINK" under a product review sends the tracked link without putting it in your bio.
- Local businesses. A salon posts this week's openings with "Comment BOOK", and the booking page arrives by DM.

How do you set up comment to DM in ReplyRep?
- 1
Connect your Instagram account
You sign in through Meta's own login. ReplyRep never asks for your Instagram password. Your account needs to be a professional account, Business or Creator, which is free to switch to in the Instagram app.
- 2
Pick the post or reel
Choose a live post, or set the automation up on a post before you publish it. Automating posts before they go live is included on every plan.
- 3
Set the keyword
Use the word your caption asks for. Not sure which words people will use? AI-generated triggers can suggest them for a post, and you keep the ones you like.
- 4
Write the DM
Your words, your emoji, your line breaks, plus the link. Start from the Template Library if you would rather edit than start blank.
- 5

Comment your own keyword and check the DM arrives before anyone else sees it.

What limits and rules are worth knowing?
- It only messages people who commented. Comment to DM is a reply to someone who asked, which is the difference between automation and spam.
- Meta caps how fast any tool can send. On a post that takes off, sends can outrun that limit. On paid plans the Excess DM Queue and SendBack hold the overflow in order instead of dropping it.
- One DM per matched comment counts against your monthly allowance. Size your plan for your busiest month, not your average one.
- It needs a professional account. Meta's official API works with Business and Creator accounts, not personal ones.
- Keyword choice matters. A common word like "yes" will match comments that weren't asking for anything. See the best Instagram comment keywords.
