What does "comment LINK" mean on Instagram?
When a post or reel says "comment LINK and I'll send it to you", the account is using a comment-to-DM automation. You comment the word, a tool connected to their account sees it, and it sends you a direct message with the link. The word is not always LINK. It might be GUIDE, RECIPE, CODE or SHOP, but the mechanism is the same.
If you commented and nothing arrived, check your Requests folder. Meta delivers the message to your main inbox if you follow the account and to Requests if you do not.
How does comment for link work behind the scenes?
- 1
The creator connects a tool
An automation tool like ReplyRep connects to their Instagram professional account through Meta's official API, with Instagram login, not a password.
- 2
They set a keyword and a DM
For example LINK, and a message containing the URL.
- 3
You comment the keyword
Instagram notifies the tool of the new comment.
- 4
The tool sends a private reply
A private reply is a DM tied to your comment. With ReplyRep it arrives about three seconds after the comment in normal conditions.
- 5
A public reply may appear
Many creators also reply under your comment ("Sent, check your DMs") so others know it works.
| Rule | What it means |
|---|---|
| One message per comment | The account can send you one private reply for that comment |
| Within 7 days | The reply has to go out within 7 days of your comment (posts, reels and ads) |
| Follow ups need your reply | A second message is only allowed if you respond, and within 24 hours of your response |
| Inbox or Requests | Main inbox if you follow the account, Requests if you do not |
| Rate limit | 750 private replies per hour per account for post and reel comments |
More detail on the rules is in Instagram private replies explained.
Why do creators use comment for link posts?
- The link reaches people where they are. "Link in bio" asks people to leave the post, open the profile and find the right link. A comment is one word typed without leaving the reel.
- Every post can have its own link. No more changing the bio link for each reel and breaking the old ones.
- It starts a conversation. The DM can ask a question, collect an email or offer the next thing, which a bio link cannot.
- The comments show demand. A thread full of keyword comments tells the creator, and other viewers, that people want the thing.
- It works on non-followers. Reels reach strangers, and the DM gets them the link even if they do not follow yet.

What makes a comment for link post work well?
The automation is the easy part. Whether people comment depends on the post, and whether they come back next time depends on the DM. The posts that get the most keyword comments tend to share a few traits.
- The reward is specific. "Comment LINK for the lamp" beats "comment LINK for more info". People comment for a thing, not a vague promise.
- The keyword matches the reward. RECIPE for a recipe, CODE for a code. The word reminds them what they asked for when the DM arrives.
- The instruction appears three times: spoken, on screen and in the first line of the caption. Many people watch without sound or skip the caption.
- The thread shows it working. Public replies under comments prove to the next viewer that the DM arrives, which is often what tips them into commenting.
- The DM delivers exactly what was promised, in the first line, without a sales pitch in front of it.
- Every post has its own link. Once your audience trusts that the keyword always works, they comment faster on the next post.

Is comment for link allowed on Instagram?
Yes, when it runs on Meta's official API. Private replies are a documented Meta feature built for exactly this: a business replying privately to someone who commented. The person comments first, so the business is not cold messaging anyone. What is not allowed is using tools that ask for your Instagram password, which Instagram's terms forbid, or sending spam at very high frequencies. Is Instagram DM automation allowed? covers the rules in full.
How do you set up a comment for link post?
- 1
Switch to a professional account
Business or creator. Meta's APIs require an Instagram professional account.
- 2
Connect ReplyRep
Log in with Instagram. Setup takes about four minutes.
- 3
Choose the post and the keyword
Pick an existing post or set it up before you publish. Use one word that names the reward.
- 4
Write the DM
Link on the first line, one line on what it is.
- 5
Optional extras
A public reply under each comment (Lite and up), a follow check before the link (Lite and up) or an email request (Lite and up).
- 6
Test it
Comment the keyword from a second account, check the DM arrives and the link opens.
- 7
Tell people in the post
Say the keyword in the reel, show it on screen and put it in the caption.

Why didn't the DM arrive?
- It is in Requests. Non-followers get private replies in the Requests folder.
- The keyword did not match. A typo or an extra word can stop the trigger, depending on how the automation is set.
- The comment is too old. Meta only allows a private reply within 7 days of the comment.
- The post went viral. At 750 private replies per hour, a big spike takes time. A queue sends the overflow in order instead of dropping it.
- It was a Live comment. Private replies to Live comments can only go out during the broadcast.
If you run the automation, test every new post from a second account before you promote it, and reply by hand to anyone who says they missed the DM. A missed message costs you one link; a commenter who feels ignored may not comment again.
