How to send a link in an Instagram DM automatically

Ask people to comment or message a keyword, and have a tool on Meta's official API send the link by DM. In ReplyRep you add the keyword to a post, story or your whole account, paste the link into the DM, and it arrives about three seconds after the comment. Send the exact page, not a link page, and tag it so you can measure clicks.

Instagram captions do not make links clickable, so the default is "link in bio": leave the post, open the profile, tap the bio link, find the right button on a link page. Each step loses people. A DM puts a tappable link in their messages seconds after they asked for it, and every post can have its own link instead of sharing one bio slot.

This guide is about the link itself: which one to send, where it can be triggered, and how to measure it. For the keyword mechanics, see how to set up comment to DM.

What do you need first?

  • An Instagram professional account connected to a tool on the official API. ReplyRep connects through Instagram Login, with no Facebook Page.
  • The final URL, tested on a phone. Most Instagram traffic is mobile, so check the page loads fast and the button is visible without scrolling.
  • A keyword that matches the link: SHOP, BOOK, LINK, CODE.
  • A way to tag the link for analytics (UTM parameters), so DM clicks show up as their own source.
  1. 1

    Build the link

Use the exact page: the product, not the shop home; the booking slot, not the about page. Add UTM tags such as utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=dm&utm_campaign=spring-drop.

  2. 2

    Choose the trigger

A post or reel for content-specific links, stories for drops, a Global Trigger for links people ask for everywhere.

  3. 3

    Add the keyword

One word linked to the destination. SHOP for a product, BOOK for a booking page.

  4. 4

Write the DM around the link

Greeting, one line on what is behind the link, the link on its own line, one line on what to do next.

  5. 5

Test the link from the DM

Comment from a second account and tap the link inside Instagram. Instagram opens links in its own browser, so check the page works there, including any login or checkout.

  6. 6

    Tell people

Caption, on-screen text, pinned comment: "Comment SHOP and I'll DM you the link."

The DM earns its clicks by skipping steps, so the link should land people as close to the finish as possible.

Add UTM parameters so your analytics can tell DM clicks apart from bio and story clicks. A simple pattern that scales:

  • utm_source=instagram on every Instagram link.
  • utm_medium=dm for links sent by DM, so you can compare with utm_medium=bio and utm_medium=story.
  • utm_campaign set to the post or keyword, such as spring-drop or recipe-card, so each post's clicks stand alone.

Then compare keyword comments with clicks and sales per campaign. A post with many comments and few clicks needs a better first line. A post with clicks and no sales needs a better page.

A tech creator reviews a pair of headphones and uses an affiliate link. Disclosure goes in the DM as well as the caption, and the link is tagged so the creator can compare DM clicks with bio clicks.

Hey {first_name}, here are the headphones from the video: {link} (Affiliate link, I earn a small commission at no cost to you.) The case is sold separately, the cheap one is fine.

Yes, in a few ways. The simplest is a different keyword per link: SHOP for the product, SIZE for the size guide. Each keyword sends its own DM, and each link gets its own UTM campaign.

For more than two or three options, ask a question in the first DM and branch on the answer. ReplyRep's Flow Automation does this: "Which are you after, the starter kit or the refills?", then the matching link. Because the person replied, Meta's 24-hour window is open and the second message is allowed. After the link, Suggest More (Lite and up) can point to the next thing they are likely to want, such as the matching product or the next guide.

  • It is in Requests. Meta sends a private reply to Requests when the commenter does not follow you. Mention it in your public reply.
  • The keyword missed. Misspelled, on a different post, or a GIF or sticker reply to a story, which Meta's story reply webhook does not support.
  • The comment was too old. Private replies must go out within 7 days of the comment.
  • The link broke inside Instagram. Pages that need a login or block in-app browsers can fail. Test from the DM, not from your desktop.
  • The link looked untrustworthy. Meta's Developer Policies ban "directing users off Facebook or Instagram via deceptive or malicious URLs". Use your own domain or a well-known store, and say where the link goes.
  • The first line did not say what it was. People see the notification preview. If it is "Hey!", they do not know the link is inside.
  • One link per DM. Several links compete with each other.
  • Put the link in the first message. After a private reply, you can only message again if they respond.
  • Use a readable URL. A bare domain people recognise earns more taps than a long string.
  • Want the follow or the email before the link? See follow-gated DMs and collecting emails.
  • Track it: compare clicks per keyword with measuring Instagram DM conversions.
