What should you measure in an Instagram DM campaign?
A DM campaign has four steps you can count: people comment, the DM goes out, people act on it (click, reply, give an email) and some of them buy. Measure each step separately. One overall number hides where people drop off. The formulas below are the ones to put in a spreadsheet.
| Metric | Formula | Where the numbers come from |
|---|---|---|
| Keyword comment rate | Keyword comments / reel or post views | Instagram insights for views, your automation tool for keyword comments |
| DM delivery | DMs sent / keyword comments | Your automation tool |
| Click-through rate | Link clicks / DMs sent | UTM sessions in analytics, or your link shortener |
| Email capture rate | Emails collected / DMs sent | Your email tool or the exported CSV |
| Reply rate | People who replied / DMs sent | Your inbox or automation tool |
| Conversion rate | Orders (or signups) / link clicks | Store or analytics, filtered by UTM |
| Revenue per DM | Revenue from the campaign / DMs sent | Store reports plus your DM count |
See the conversion rate glossary entry if you need the definitions in one place.
How do you build UTM links for Instagram DMs?
UTM parameters are tags on the end of a URL that tell analytics where a visit came from. Without them, a click from a DM usually shows up as Instagram or direct traffic, mixed in with bio clicks and everything else. Use the same naming every time so reports group cleanly.
| Parameter | Use this | Example |
|---|---|---|
| utm_source | Always instagram | |
| utm_medium | Always dm | dm |
| utm_campaign | The campaign or offer | spring-guide |
| utm_content | The keyword or post, to compare variations | guide-reel-0412 |
A full link looks like this: yoursite.com/guide?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=dm&utm_campaign=spring-guide&utm_content=guide-reel-0412. Put that whole link in the DM. If it looks long, use your own link shortener that keeps the parameters when it redirects.
How do you track link clicks from DMs?
- Analytics sessions by UTM. In your web analytics, filter by source instagram and medium dm. Sessions are close to clicks, minus people who closed the page before it loaded.
- A link shortener with click counts. Counts every tap, including ones that never reach your site. Useful when the destination is a page you do not control, such as an affiliate link.
- Store reports. Shopify and most store platforms report sessions and orders by UTM source and campaign.
Expect the numbers from different tools to differ a little. Pick one as your source of truth for each metric and stick with it.
How do you measure email capture rate?
Email capture rate is emails collected divided by DMs sent. If you asked for the email in the DM with ReplyRep's Email Collector (on Lite and up), the addresses export as CSV or sync to Klaviyo, Mailchimp, HubSpot or Google Sheets. Tag them with the campaign name in your email tool so later purchases can be traced back. Then track what that list does: open rates on the welcome email, and orders from those subscribers over the next 30 to 90 days.
How do you attribute sales to Instagram DMs?
- 1
UTM-tagged links
Your store or analytics attributes the order to source instagram, medium dm, when the buyer clicks through and buys in the same session.
- 2
A campaign-only discount code
Count the code's uses in your store's discount report. This catches people who copied the code and bought later on another device.
- 3
Email attribution
Orders from subscribers who joined through the DM, as reported by your email tool.
- 4
Deduplicate
An order with the UTM and the code is one sale, not two. Use the order ID to count each sale once.
The Instagram DM automation ROI calculator turns your rates into revenue and compares it to what the tool costs.

Are there benchmarks for Instagram DM conversion rates?
We do not publish industry benchmarks, because we have not seen a reliable public source for them and results swing widely with niche, offer and audience. The most useful benchmark is your own last campaign. If you need a starting point for planning, here are assumptions you can replace once you have data.
| Metric | Assumption to plan with | Replace it with |
|---|---|---|
| Click-through rate | Assume 50% | Your first campaign's clicks / DMs sent |
| Email capture rate | Assume 30% | Your emails / DMs sent |
| Conversion rate on a low-priced product | Assume 3% | Your orders / clicks |
What we can share is one ReplyRep creator result, exactly as reported: @alice.trains (Business coach, 125K followers): 62% of DMs get a reply. Treat it as one account's outcome, not an average.
What are the most common measurement mistakes?
- Untagged links. The most common one. A single DM link without UTMs makes the whole campaign invisible in analytics.
- Inconsistent naming. "Instagram", "instagram" and "IG" become three sources in most reports. Write the convention down and reuse it.
- Measuring per comment instead of per DM. Some comments are duplicates from the same person. Use DMs sent as the base for click and email rates.
- Counting the same sale twice when it carries both a UTM and a code.
- Judging a campaign on day one. People save DMs and come back. Give each campaign at least a week before comparing.
- Comparing a free offer with a paid one. A free guide and a $200 course will never have the same conversion rate. Compare like with like.
What should a weekly DM report include?
| Campaign | Keyword comments | DMs sent | Clicks | Emails | Orders | Revenue |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| spring-guide | ... | ... | ... | ... | ... | ... |
| spring15-code | ... | ... | ... | ... | ... | ... |
- Compare campaigns to each other, not to someone else's numbers.
- Change one thing at a time (keyword, DM copy, offer) so you know what moved the number.
- Watch reply rate. Replies open the 24-hour window for a follow up, so a higher reply rate means more second chances.
To improve the weakest step, start with Instagram DM copy that converts for clicks and replies, or Instagram comment keywords for DM automation for comment rate.
