How to grow your email list from Instagram comments

To grow an email list from Instagram, offer something worth an email, ask people to comment a keyword, and collect the address inside the DM before sending the link. ReplyRep's Email Collector does this in the chat and exports addresses as CSV or syncs them to Klaviyo, Mailchimp, HubSpot or Google Sheets, so followers become subscribers you can reach without the algorithm.

How does email capture in Instagram DMs work?

Someone comments your keyword. Instead of sending the link straight away, the DM asks where to send it. They reply with their email, it is saved and synced to your email tool, and the thing they asked for arrives. No landing page, no form, no leaving Instagram to sign up.

It is the same comment-to-DM loop as any other play, with one extra message. That message is the difference between an audience the algorithm rents you and a list you own.

Why collect emails in the DM instead of a landing page?

  • No page to load. The email is typed into the chat they already have open.
  • Higher intent. They asked for the thing, so the ask is a natural next step.
  • Fewer fake addresses. People who start a real conversation tend to give a real email.
  • Every post can capture. Each post can carry its own incentive and keyword.

How do you set it up?

  1. 1

    Choose the incentive

A guide, a code, a waitlist, a weekly newsletter with a clear promise. The bigger the ask, the clearer the value has to be.

  2. 2

    Connect your email tool

Sync to Klaviyo, Mailchimp, HubSpot or Google Sheets, or export as CSV. Tag the source so you know these subscribers came from Instagram.

  3. 3

Add the keyword and turn on email capture

The Email Collector asks for the address inside the DM before the link goes out.

  4. 4

    Write the ask

One line: what you will send and what else they will get. Tell them how often you email.

  5. 5

    Deliver immediately

Send the link in the DM right after they reply, and the welcome email from your email tool. Waiting kills trust.

  6. 6

Follow up the people who did not answer

A short reminder for those who got the ask and went quiet.

Thanks {first_name}. Doors open in March. What email should I use to let you know first? No spam, just the opening date and the early price.

Ten more variations are in the email capture DM templates.

What should the caption and keyword say?

Sell the incentive, not the list. "Comment PLAN and I'll send you the 4-week plan" gets comments. "Join my newsletter" mostly does not. Mention that you will ask for an email if the incentive is substantial, so nobody feels tricked.

How do you turn new subscribers into readers?

The capture is half the job. A subscriber from Instagram knows you from short videos, so the first emails have to feel like the account they followed.

  1. Deliver the incentive at once, in the DM and in a welcome email.
  2. Introduce yourself in the second email: who you are, what you send, how often.
  3. Give one more useful thing before you sell anything.
  4. Tag the source ("instagram" plus the keyword) so you can segment by topic later.
  5. Link back to Instagram for people who prefer it there. The two channels feed each other.

Which metrics should you watch?

  • Capture rate: emails collected divided by DMs sent. Low means the ask is unclear or the incentive is weak.
  • Subscribers per post, to see which topics bring in readers.
  • Open and click rates of Instagram subscribers against your other sources.
  • Revenue per subscriber from Instagram, over 90 days.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Adding people to a list they did not expect. Say what they are signing up for.
  • Never emailing them. A cold list forgets you.
  • Asking for email, phone and name for a one-page PDF.
  • Not tagging the source, so you can never tell what Instagram is worth.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. ReplyRep's Email Collector asks for the email inside the DM, saves the reply and exports it as CSV or syncs it to Klaviyo, Mailchimp, HubSpot or Google Sheets. It is included on the paid plans.

Collecting an email someone gives you is normal, but you still need consent for what you send and a privacy notice that explains it. Rules such as GDPR and CAN-SPAM apply the same way they do to a website form. Say clearly what they are signing up for.

Something specific and immediate: a template, a code, a recipe, a short plan. Specific beats generic. "The 12 hooks I used this month" outperforms "my newsletter" because people know exactly what they get.

Yes. Emails and phone numbers can be collected in the DM, exported as CSV, or synced to Klaviyo, Mailchimp, HubSpot or Google Sheets. Ask only for what you will actually use.

Some will. A welcome email that arrives instantly tells you which addresses work, and the DM thread remains as a second way to reach the person. Sending the incentive in the DM as well means nobody loses out because of a typo.
