What is opt-in for Instagram DMs?

Opt-in is a person's permission to be contacted. Meta's Developer Policies forbid contacting people through Instagram messaging without legally sufficient opt-in, and require opt-out requests to be honored immediately. In practice, Instagram automation starts with the person acting first, with a comment, story reply or DM, which is why ReplyRep only messages people who interacted first.

What do Meta's opt-in rules say?

  • Don't contact people in Instagram messaging unless you have legally sufficient consent, permission or opt-in under the applicable laws.
  • Immediately respect any request to block, stop or opt out of messaging.
  • The person must start the conversation before a business can message them.
  • Message tags may not be used for deals, offers, coupons or discounts.

What does a comment opt you in to?

Someone who comments GUIDE has asked for the guide. That makes a DM with the guide expected, and Meta's private reply rules allow exactly one. It is not permission for weekly promotions. If you want to keep contacting them, ask: "Want the next guide by email? Reply with your address." That reply is a clear, separate opt-in for email.

Why does opt-in matter for DM automation?

Meta's Developer Policies ban spam in messaging and say experiences that receive excessive negative feedback may be limited, paused, rate-limited or removed. Messages people asked for don't get reported. Messages they didn't ask for do.

How does ReplyRep handle opt-in?

ReplyRep only messages people who interacted first, and it works inside Meta's messaging window. On Lite and up, the Email Collector asks for an email inside the DM, so the person chooses to give it. Frequently asked questions

It counts as asking for the reply you promised, and Meta allows one private reply to the comment. It is not consent to ongoing marketing. Ask separately, for example for an email address, if you want to keep in touch.

Stop straight away. Meta's Developer Policies require businesses to immediately respect requests, on or off Instagram, to block, discontinue or opt out of messaging. Remove them from any email list built from the DM too, if they ask.

Not through Meta's API. Meta says the conversation must be initiated by the person. Cold DMs to people who never interacted with you are outside what the official API allows.

Asking for an email inside a conversation the person started is a common practice. Be clear about what they will receive, store it properly, and follow the email marketing laws that apply where you and your audience are.
