How does the messaging window work?
Meta calls it the standard messaging window. A person's action opens it, and the business can reply freely until it closes. The actions Meta lists for Instagram include:
- The person sends a message to your professional account (24 hours).
- The person clicks a Click-to-Direct ad and sends their first message (up to 7 days).
- The person clicks an ig.me link into an existing conversation with you.
- The person reacts to a message.
- The person taps an item in your persistent menu (24 hours to respond).
What does the messaging window look like in practice?
A follower replies to your story at 9am on Tuesday: "is this back in stock?" You can answer until 9am on Wednesday. If they message again at 8pm on Tuesday, that new message is a fresh action, so the window runs to 8pm on Wednesday. If nobody answers in time, an automated reply is no longer allowed.
Why does the messaging window matter for DM automation?
It is why Instagram automation is reactive, not broadcast. Meta says the person must start the conversation, one-time notifications and sponsored messages are not available for the Instagram Messaging API, and message tags may not carry deals, offers, coupons or discounts. The only outside-window option to rely on is the human agent tag, for people, not bots.
How does ReplyRep work inside the window?
ReplyRep only messages people who interacted first: a comment, a story reply, a story mention or a DM. Replies go out about three seconds after the interaction, well inside any window. See how automatic Instagram DMs work, or read the full 24-hour messaging window guide.
Reply while the window is open
ReplyRep answers comments, story replies and DMs about three seconds after they arrive.
