How does a private reply work?
The app learns about a new comment from Instagram, then sends a message addressed to that comment rather than to the person. Instagram delivers it as a DM. Meta supports private replies on comments on a professional account's posts, reels, stories, Live and ad posts. These are the rules Meta publishes:
| Rule | What Meta says |
|---|---|
| Messages per comment | One |
| Time limit | Within 7 days of the comment (posts, reels, ads) |
| Instagram Live | Only while the broadcast is live |
| Where it lands | Inbox if they follow you, Requests if they don't |
| What it contains | Your message plus a link to the commented post |
| Follow-ups | Only after they respond, within 24 hours of the response |
| Rate limit | 750 per hour per account for post and reel comments |
What does a private reply look like in practice?
Someone comments PRICE under your reel on Monday. About three seconds later they get: "The linen set is $68 and ships in two days: yourbrand.com/linen. Want your size checked first?" If they answer "do you ship to Canada?", the 24-hour messaging window opens and the conversation can continue. If an app tried to reply to that comment eight days later, Meta's 7-day limit would block it.
Why do private replies matter for DM automation?
Meta requires the person to start any conversation with a business. The private reply is what lets a comment count as that start. The one-message rule is also why the first DM has to carry everything: the link, the code, and a reason to reply.
How does ReplyRep handle private replies?
ReplyRep is a Meta Business Partner on the official API and answers keyword comments about three seconds after they are posted. When a post draws more comments in an hour than Meta allows, the Excess DM Queue (Lite and up) keeps them in order, and SendBack goes back for interactions that were skipped or delayed. Read the Instagram private replies guide for the details, or see how comment-to-DM is set up.
Let every commenter get their DM
