What is the Instagram 24-hour messaging window?
When someone does something that invites a reply, like sending your account a DM, Meta gives your business, and any app working for it, a limited time to send messages back through the API. Meta calls this the standard messaging window. The Instagram Platform overview, last updated September 28, 2026, defines it like this:
The duration of the standard messaging window depends on the user action that opens it. For most user actions, it lasts 24 hours. When the user action is a person sending their first message after clicking a Click-to-Direct ad, the window may last up to 7 days from that message.
Meta's Developer Policies, last updated February 3, 2026, say the same: "It lasts 24 hours, except when the interaction is a person clicking on your Click-to-Messenger or Click-to-Instagram-Direct ad and then sending you a message; in this case it may last up to 7 days."
Inside the window, an automation tool can reply as often as the conversation needs. Outside it, automated messages stop. The window exists so businesses answer people who reached out, and cannot keep messaging people who did not.
What opens the messaging window?
Meta lists the user actions that open the standard window on its Send a message page (last updated September 28, 2026). Here they are for Instagram, with the time each one gives you.
| What the person does | What you can send | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Sends your account a DM (this includes replying to your story) | Messages for 24 hours | Send a message, Messenger Platform; Instagram Platform overview |
| Clicks a Click-to-Direct ad, then sends their first message | Messages for up to 7 days from that message | Instagram Platform overview; Developer Policies |
| Clicks an ig.me link into an existing conversation with you | Messages for 24 hours | Send a message, Messenger Platform |
| Reacts to one of your messages | Messages for 24 hours | Send a message, Messenger Platform |
| Taps an item in your persistent menu | "You have 24 hours to respond to the person after the CTA" | Persistent menu, Instagram Login |
| Comments on your post, reel, story, Live or ad | One private reply within 7 days (Live: only during the broadcast). More only after they respond | Private replies, Instagram API |
Story mentions are a special case. Meta's messaging docs say conversations begin when a person messages the account "through your app user's Instagram Feed, posts, story mentions, and other channels". Meta does not publish a separate window length for a story mention, so we treat it as the standard 24 hours.
Because every new message from the person opens the window again, the 24 hours effectively run from their latest message. A lively conversation never closes. A conversation they walk away from closes a day later.
Do comments open the 24-hour window?
This is where most guides get it wrong. Meta's general Messenger Platform list includes "A person comments on a post" among the actions that open the window. But Meta's Instagram-specific Private Replies pages set a stricter rule for Instagram comments, and that is the one to follow:
Only one message can be sent to the commenter
Follow-up messages can only be sent if the recipient responds, and must be sent within 24 hours of the response
So a comment does not give you 24 hours of messaging. It gives you one message, which you have up to 7 days to send. If the person replies to that message, the normal 24-hour window opens from their reply, and the conversation can continue. If they do not reply, you cannot send them anything else through the API. Our Instagram private replies guide covers this rule in depth.
What can you send after the window closes?
Very little, and nothing promotional. On Instagram, Meta's documentation leaves one practical option:
| Option | Status on Instagram | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Human Agent tag | Available. A human (not automation) can reply within 7 days of the user's message, for support that could not be resolved in 24 hours | Instagram Platform overview; IG Messaging API policy |
| Promotional content in any tag | Not allowed: "deals, offers, coupons, and discounts" are named | Send a message, Messenger Platform |
| One-time notifications | "not available for IG Messaging API" | IG Messaging API policy |
| News messaging | "not available for IG Messaging API" | IG Messaging API policy |
| Sponsored messages | "not available for IG Messaging API" | IG Messaging API policy |
| CONFIRMED_EVENT_UPDATE, ACCOUNT_UPDATE, POST_PURCHASE_UPDATE tags | Return error code 100 since April 27, 2026 | Send a message; Messenger Platform changelog |
Meta's full per-tag list sits on a Send API reference page that needs a Facebook login, and we could not verify it. What the readable pages make clear: on Instagram, the Human Agent tag is the outside-window tag to rely on, and it is for a person helping a customer, not for automated marketing.
What does the window mean in practice?
A worked example makes the rules concrete. You post a reel with "Comment GUIDE for my free meal plan".
- 1
Monday 9:00, Priya comments GUIDE
Your tool sends one private reply with the meal plan link, about three seconds later in ReplyRep's case. That is the one message the comment allows.
- 2
Priya does not reply
Nothing else can be sent to her through the API. No reminder, no follow-up. The comment never opened a 24-hour window.
- 3
Or: Monday 18:00, Priya replies "Is this OK for vegetarians?"
Her reply opens the standard window. You, or your automation, can message her until Tuesday 18:00.
- 4
Tuesday 12:00, she asks another question
The window opens again from her new message, so it now runs to Wednesday 12:00.
- 5
Friday, you want to tell her about a sale
Too late. The window closed Wednesday, and tags cannot carry promotions. Wait until she messages again.
- End your first DM with a question. "Want the shopping list too?" A reply from them is what opens the 24-hour window.
- Put the important thing in the first message. If they never reply, it is the only message they get.
- Answer quickly. A reply inside a few hours lands while they still care. A reply 23 hours later is legal and much less useful.
- Use story replies and DMs as conversation starters. They are messages, so they open the full 24 hours right away.
How does ReplyRep handle the window?
ReplyRep runs on Meta's official Instagram API, so Meta's window rules apply to every message it sends. In practice:
- Comments get one private reply. The comment-to-DM feature sends the single message Meta allows, with your link in it.
- DMs and story replies get answered inside the window. Instagram auto DM and story reply automation respond while the person is still there.
- Follow-ups play by the same rules. Follow Up sends a second message you write. Like every message on the official API, it can only go where Meta's rules allow it.
- Late replies are still on time. If a post spikes past Meta's hourly limit, the Excess DM Queue (Lite and up) sends the overflow in order, well inside Meta's 7-day private reply deadline.

Common myths about the 24-hour window
- Myth: A comment gives you 24 hours to DM. On Instagram, a comment allows one private reply, sent within 7 days. More only after they respond.
- Myth: You can use a tag to send a promo after 24 hours. Meta says tags "may not be used to send promotional content".
- Myth: One-time notifications work on Instagram. Meta says they are "not available for IG Messaging API".
- Myth: The human agent tag lets bots reply for 7 days. It is for a human agent responding, not automation.
- Myth: The window is 24 hours from the first message. Each new message from the person opens it again.
