What is Instagram DM follow up automation?
Most people who ask for your link don't use it the moment it arrives. They're on the bus, the kettle boils, a friend messages them. A follow up is a second, short DM that reminds them of what they asked for, at a time you choose.
Follow Up in ReplyRep is for the people who got the link and went quiet. You write the message and set the timing. It's not a sequence of ten nudges; it's the one well-timed reminder you would send by hand if you had the time to send it to everyone.
How does Follow Up work?
- 1
The first DM goes out
Someone comments your keyword and gets the link.
- 2
They go quiet
No reply, no next step.
- 3
Your follow up arrives
The second message you wrote, sent on the timing you set.
- 4
Optionally, suggest the next thing
Suggest More, also on paid plans, nudges people toward the matching product, the next guide or the bundle.

A follow up works when it adds one new reason to act: a deadline, a bonus, an answer to the most common objection. "Just checking in" adds nothing. Keep it to two lines and include the link again so nobody has to scroll up. For wording, see Instagram DM copy that converts.
When should you send a follow up?
- Webinars and live sessions. A reminder before registration closes. See webinar signups.
- Launches. "Last day of launch pricing" to everyone who asked for the link. See product launch.
- Ecommerce. A follow up that answers the usual question, like sizing or shipping, for people who looked but didn't buy.
- Coaching calls. A second nudge with the booking link for people who asked about availability. See booking appointments.
- Lead magnets. A note pointing to the most useful page of the guide, which gets people to actually open it.
Win back the people who meant to click
Follow Up is on Lite and up, from $10 a month.
How do you set up Follow Up in ReplyRep?
- 1
Build the first DM
Connect your Business or Creator account through Meta, pick the post, set the keyword and write the message with the link.
- 2
Switch on Follow Up
Add the second message to the same automation.
- 3
Write it and set the timing
Pick a timing that fits the offer: sooner for a deadline, later for a resource they need time to use.
- 4
Test it
Comment the keyword, don't click, and check the follow up arrives as planned.
The full automation is done in about four minutes. For building a sequence around it, read the Instagram DM sales funnel.
What should a follow up say?
- A deadline. "Registration closes tomorrow" works for webinars, launches and cohorts.
- A missing piece. The answer to the question most people have before buying, like sizing or how long it takes.
- A small bonus. A code, an extra resource or a replay, for people who act now.
- A pointer. "Page 3 is the one people screenshot" gets a guide opened rather than forgotten.
- A question. "Did it work for you?" invites a reply, and replies start conversations you can sell in.
Pick one. A follow up that tries to do all five reads like a newsletter. If the person replies, the conversation is yours to pick up, or AI inbox replies can answer in your voice.
Which plan includes Follow Up?
Follow Up is on Lite and up, from $10 a month, along with Suggest More. Each follow up is one DM from your monthly allowance, so a campaign with a follow up can use up to twice as many DMs as one without. See pricing.

Follow Up or Suggest More: what's the difference?
Both are second messages, and both are on the same plans. They do different jobs. Follow Up is for people who went quiet: it repeats the offer with one new reason to act. Suggest More is for people who got what they wanted: right after the link, it points to the next thing they're likely to want, like the matching product, the next guide or the bundle. A ceramics shop might use Suggest More to offer the saucer that matches the mug someone just asked about, and Follow Up two days later for people who never opened the link.
What are the rules for following up on Instagram?
- Meta limits when businesses can message people. Instagram has a messaging window after someone's last interaction. Read the Instagram messaging window guide before planning long gaps.
- One good follow up beats many. Repeated nudges get muted or reported.
- Only people who asked get it. Follow Up goes to people who received the first DM, which they triggered by commenting.
- Count it in your DM budget. Every follow up is a DM.
