How do you collect emails from Instagram DMs?
Followers belong to Instagram. An email list belongs to you. The best moment to ask for an email is when someone has just asked you for something: they commented GUIDE, they want the guide, and giving an address to get it is a fair trade. Email Collector puts that ask inside the DM, before the link.
Because the person is already in a conversation with you, there's no landing page to load and no form to fill in. They type their email in the reply box they already have open. That is why DM capture tends to feel lighter than sending people to a signup page.
How does the Email Collector work?
- 1
Someone comments your keyword
Or replies to your story, depending on the trigger.
- 2
The DM asks for their email
For example, "Where should I send the free guide?"
- 3
They reply with it
The address is saved to your list.
- 4
The link goes out
They get what they asked for, in the same thread.
- 5
Your list goes where you need it
Export as CSV, or sync to Klaviyo, Mailchimp, HubSpot or Google Sheets.
What does an email capture DM look like?

DM
Hey {first_name}! Where should I send the free guide? Just reply with your email. (Then: Got it, thank you. Here's the guide: yourbrand.com/guide. I'll send the next part to your inbox on Friday.)
Say what they'll get and when, so the email feels like part of the deal rather than a toll. If you'll send marketing emails, say so plainly; it's what your email platform and your subscribers expect. More examples are in the email capture templates.
When should you collect emails in DMs?
- Lead magnets. The guide, checklist or template goes to the inbox list as well as the DM. See lead magnet delivery.
- Webinars. Registrations need an email anyway, so collect it in the DM. See webinar signups.
- Ecommerce launches. An early-access list for the drop, synced straight to Klaviyo for launch day.
- Coaches and course creators. Build the list you'll sell the program to. See course creators.
- Nonprofits and events. Collect sign-ups for updates or tickets. See nonprofits.

Should you collect emails in the DM or on a landing page?
| Email Collector in the DM | Landing page form | |
|---|---|---|
| Steps for the person | Type the email in the chat they already have open | Tap the link, wait for the page, fill in the form |
| Where they leave Instagram | After they've given the email | Before they've given anything |
| Best for | Freebies, waitlists, webinar seats | Long forms, payments, detailed applications |
Use the DM when all you need is an email address and the trade is simple. Use a landing page when you need more information than a chat can comfortably ask for. Many accounts use both: the DM collects the email and the delivered link goes to a page with the rest.
Which plan includes the Email Collector?

What should you know about collecting emails on Instagram?
- Ask for one thing at a time. An email and a follow in the same DM is two asks. Choose the one this post needs.
- Say how you'll use it. If they'll get a newsletter, tell them. It's fair, and it keeps your unsubscribe rate down.
- Phone numbers work too. Collected numbers export as CSV or sync the same way as emails.
- It only messages people who asked. The email request is part of a conversation they started by commenting.
- Sync early. Retention on your plan is limited, and the list is most valuable in the tool you send email from.
