What does follow to get link mean on Instagram?
It is a trade: the link costs a follow. You post something people want, ask them to comment a keyword, and the DM checks whether they follow you before handing it over. People who already follow get it straight away. People who don't are asked to follow first.
The reason to do it is reach. The posts that get the most keyword comments are usually reels that traveled beyond your followers. Without a follow gate, those strangers take the link and leave. With one, a share of them stay, and the next post reaches them too.
How do Follow-Gated DMs work?
- 1
Someone comments your keyword
On a post, a reel or wherever the automation is listening.
- 2
ReplyRep checks the follow
Before sending the link, it checks whether they follow your account.
- 3
Not following yet? They're asked to
The DM invites them to follow, for example "Tap follow and it's yours".
- 4
Follow checked, link sent
Once the follow is confirmed, the link goes out in the same thread.
What does a follow-gated DM look like?
Public reply
Sent you a DM π
DM
Love that you want the guide {first_name}! Tap follow and it's yours π (Once you're following: here it is, yourbrand.com/guide β¨)
Two messages make up the gate: the ask, and the delivery once the follow is checked. Keep the ask warm and short. People respond better to "tap follow and it's yours" than to anything that sounds like a condition. More versions are in the follow-gate templates.
When should you gate a link behind a follow?
- Free resources on reels. A creator's free template pack is worth a follow, and reels are where non-followers see it.
- Giveaways. "Follow, then enter" is the classic giveaway rule, and the follow gate enforces it automatically. See Instagram giveaways.
- Launch waitlists. Brands building toward a drop gate the early-access link, so the launch post reaches everyone on the list.
- Fitness and coaching freebies. A free workout plan or a mini-course behind a follow grows the audience you'll sell the full program to. See fitness.
Turn your next reel into followers
Follow-Gated DMs are on Lite and up, from $10 a month.
How do you set up Follow-Gated DMs in ReplyRep?
- 1
Build the comment automation
Connect your Business or Creator account through Meta, pick the post, set the keyword and write the delivery DM.
- 2
Switch on Follow-Gated DMs
The follow check now runs before the link goes out.
- 3
Write the ask
The message people who don't follow you yet will see. One line, warm, with the reason to follow.
- 4
Test both paths
Comment from an account that follows you, and ask a friend who doesn't to try it.
The full automation takes about four minutes. For strategy, read how to grow followers with follow-gated DMs.
What should you gate, and what should you leave open?
| Offer | Gate it? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Free guide, template or preset pack | Yes | Worth a follow, and the follower sees your next post |
| Giveaway entry | Yes | Following is already the usual entry rule |
| Early access to a drop | Yes | Your launch post then reaches everyone who wanted in |
| Product link under an ad | No | They're ready to buy; don't add a step |
| Booking link or price | No | Friction here costs revenue, not just clicks |
The rule of thumb: gate what you give away, never what you sell. A follow gate on a freebie grows the audience you'll sell to later. A follow gate on a checkout link just loses sales.

What should you know before gating links?
- Some people won't follow. That's the trade. Gate things that are worth a follow, and you'll lose few.
- Followers you gain this way are interested. They followed for the thing you make, which is better than a follow-for-follow.
- It still only messages people who commented. The gate sits inside a conversation they started.
- Pair it with Email Collector carefully. Asking for a follow and an email in one DM is two asks. Pick the one that matters more for this post.
