How does a giveaway auto DM work?
You post the giveaway and ask people to comment a keyword, for example WIN. Each person who comments it gets a DM confirming the entry, a link to the full terms, and the date you will announce the winner. If you want the giveaway to grow the account, a follow gate checks that they follow you before the confirmation goes out.
The automation handles the confirmations. It does not pick a winner, and it does not replace your own terms. Those stay with you.
Why confirm entries by DM?
- People know they are in. Without a confirmation, entrants comment twice, tag friends in replies and message you asking if it worked.
- The rules are one tap away. The DM carries the link to the terms, so entrants actually see them.
- You can reach the winner. The DM thread already exists, and an email captured on entry is a second way to contact them.
- The comment section stays readable. Public replies say "check your DMs" instead of you typing the same answer a thousand times.
What do Instagram's promotion guidelines expect?
This is general guidance, not legal advice. Instagram's Promotion Guidelines put responsibility for running a promotion lawfully on the account running it. In particular, the official rules should include a complete release of Instagram by each entrant and an acknowledgement that the promotion is in no way sponsored, endorsed or administered by, or associated with, Instagram.
The guidelines also say you must not inaccurately tag content or encourage people to inaccurately tag it, for example asking people to tag themselves in photos they are not in. Keep entry mechanics simple: comment a keyword, follow the account. Giveaway laws also differ by country and state, so check the rules where your entrants live.
How do you set up a giveaway auto DM?
- 1
Write the terms first
Prize, eligibility, start and end date, how the winner is picked and contacted, and the Instagram disclaimer. Host them on a page you can link.
- 2
Choose an entry keyword
WIN, ENTER or the prize name. Pick something people will not type by accident in normal comments.
- 3
Add the trigger and the confirmation DM
Attach the keyword to the giveaway post. The DM confirms the entry, links the terms and gives the closing date.
- 4
Turn on the follow gate if you want
If following is an entry condition, a follow-to-get-the-link gate checks it before the confirmation goes out.
- 5
Add a public reply
A short reply under each entry, worded differently each time, so the thread shows that entries are being received.
- 6
Close the giveaway
On the closing date, remove the trigger or change the DM to say entries have closed, so late commenters are not told they are in.

- The entry action in plain words: "Comment WIN to enter. You'll get a DM confirming your entry."
- The closing date and how the winner is chosen.
- Where the full terms are, and the Instagram disclaimer.

Metrics and mistakes
Watch entries, new followers during the giveaway, emails collected, and the one that matters most: how many of those followers are still engaging a month later. A prize that has nothing to do with your product brings entrants who leave after the draw.
- Requiring people to tag friends in photos they are not in, which the guidelines prohibit.
- Leaving the trigger live after the draw closes.
- Giving away a generic prize (a phone, a gift card) that attracts people with no interest in you.
- Promising the DM will confirm something the terms do not, like better odds.
