How does lead magnet delivery on Instagram work?
You make something small and useful: a checklist, a recipe card, a swipe file, a mini course. You post about it and tell people to comment one word to get it. Every comment with that word fires a DM with the link. Every comment without it is left alone, so normal conversation under the post stays normal.
The whole loop runs on Meta's official Instagram API, and it only ever messages people who commented first. Setup takes about four minutes, and the same trigger keeps working for as long as the post keeps getting comments, which for a good lead magnet can be months.
Why deliver a lead magnet by DM instead of the bio link?
The bio link asks people to stop scrolling, open your profile, find the link, open a link page and pick the right button. Each of those taps loses people. A DM puts the link in the place they were already typing, seconds after they asked for it, while they still care.
- Fewer steps. Comment, open DM, tap. Three actions instead of five or six.
- One magnet per post. The bio holds one link. Comment triggers let every post deliver its own freebie.
- A real conversation. Once someone has messaged you, you can ask for their email, suggest the next resource and follow up.
- More comments. People commenting a keyword pushes the post to more people, so the giveaway of the guide also grows its reach.
How do you set up lead magnet automation?
- 1
Pick one keyword
Short, obvious and tied to the thing: GUIDE, CHECKLIST, RECIPE, PLAN. One word in capitals is easiest to type and easiest to match. Our list of Instagram comment keywords that work has more.
- 2
Add the trigger to the post
Connect your Instagram professional account, choose the post or reel, and add the keyword. You can set it up before you publish, so the first comment is answered too.
- 3
Write the DM
Their first name, one line about what they are getting, the link. Keep it short enough to read in the notification preview.
- 4
Decide whether to ask for an email
If the goal is a list you own, turn on email capture so the DM asks for an address before the link goes out. If the goal is reach, skip it and send the link straight away.
- 5
Add a public reply and a follow up
A public reply under each comment tells everyone else the DM really arrives. A follow up a day later catches the people who never opened the link.
- 6
Test it on your own post
Comment the keyword from a second account and check the DM arrives, the link opens and the name fills in correctly.

What should the caption and keyword say?
The caption does one job: tell people exactly what to comment and exactly what they get. Put the call to action in the first two lines, before the "more" cut, and repeat the keyword on screen in the reel itself.
- Good: "Comment GUIDE and I'll DM you the 7-day meal plan."
- Weak: "Link in bio for the plan." It sends people on a hunt.
- Weak: "Comment below if you want it." No keyword means you can't tell who wants it from who is chatting.
- Avoid keywords people type for other reasons, like YES or LOVE. They fire DMs nobody asked for.
Deliver your next freebie by DM
The free plan includes 2,000 automated DMs a month. Add a keyword to one post and watch the first DM land.
Which ReplyRep features does this use?
| Feature | What it does in this play | Plan |
|---|---|---|
| Comment to DM | Sends the DM with the link when someone comments the keyword | Every plan |
| Email Collector | Asks for the email in the DM and exports it or syncs it to your email tool | Lite and up |
| Follow Up | A second message for people who got the link and went quiet | Lite and up |
| Comment Auto Reply | A public reply under each comment, worded differently each time | Lite and up |
What metrics should you watch?
- Keyword comments per post. The clearest signal of whether the magnet itself is wanted.
- DM to click rate. Add UTM tags to the link so your analytics shows how many DMs became visits.
- Email capture rate. Emails collected divided by DMs sent. If it is low, the ask comes too early or the magnet sounds thin.
- Subscriber to customer rate. The number that decides whether the magnet is worth making again.
What mistakes should you avoid?
- Burying the keyword at the bottom of a long caption.
- Writing a DM that reads like a receipt. One human sentence beats a block of formatting.
- Asking for an email and then making people wait days for the file.
- Gating a small checklist behind three questions. Match the ask to the value.
- Forgetting to update the link when the file moves. Old posts keep firing for months.
