How to deliver a lead magnet on Instagram

Host the lead magnet at a link anyone can open, ask people to comment a keyword, and send the link by DM automatically. ReplyRep delivers it about three seconds after the comment. Decide first whether you want the email (ask before the link) or reach (send the link straight away), and test the link from a phone that is not logged into your accounts.

What is the best way to deliver a lead magnet on Instagram?

A lead magnet is a free thing you give in exchange for attention or contact details: a checklist, a template, a mini course. On Instagram, the delivery that loses the fewest people is a DM triggered by a keyword comment, which is what comment to DM automation does. The person asks, the link arrives in their messages, they tap it.

This guide is about the delivery itself: where the file lives, how it reaches people, and what breaks. For the strategy, from picking the magnet to measuring it, see the lead magnet delivery playbook.

What makes a lead magnet worth commenting for?

  • It solves one problem. "The 7 shots every wedding photographer needs" beats "My photography guide".
  • It is quick to use. A checklist, a template, a recipe card, a 10-minute video. Something they can use today.
  • It matches the post. The reel shows the result, the magnet shows how. People comment because they want the rest.
  • It leads somewhere. The best magnets are a small piece of what you sell, so the people who use them are the people who buy.

How do you write the post that delivers the lead magnet?

The post does the selling, the DM does the delivering. A structure that works for reels and carousels alike:

  1. Hook with the result. The finished budget, the plated dish, the before and after.
  2. Show a slice. One tip or one page from the magnet, so people know it is real.
  3. Say the keyword three times. On screen, in the caption's first line, and in a pinned comment.
  4. Say how it arrives. "I'll DM it to you" sets the expectation, and "check Requests if you don't follow me" saves you the questions.

Where should you host the lead magnet file?

Whatever you choose, send a link rather than the file. Meta added PDF attachments to the Instagram Direct API in December 2025, but a link can be updated after you post, tracked with UTM tags, and opens the same way on every phone.

What do you need before the post goes live?

  • An Instagram professional account connected to a tool on Meta's official API.
  • The lead magnet, finished and hosted, with sharing set so anyone can open it.
  • One keyword that names it: GUIDE, CHECKLIST, TEMPLATE.
  • A decision: link straight away, or email first.
  • A post that shows a slice of the magnet, so people know it is worth asking for.

How do you deliver a lead magnet automatically with ReplyRep?

  1. 1

    Check the link logged out

Open the link in a private browser window on a phone. If you see a login screen or "Request access", so will every lead.

  2. 2

Add the keyword before you publish

Set the automation on the post before it goes live (every plan), so the first wave of comments is answered.

  3. 3

    Write the delivery DM

Name the magnet, put the link on its own line, and add one line telling them where to start.

  4. 4

    Choose link-first or email-first

For reach, send the link straight away (every plan). For a list, switch on the Email Collector (Lite and up) so the DM asks for the address first.

  5. 5

    Add the public reply

A short reply under each comment (Lite and up) shows people the freebie really arrives, which brings more comments.

  6. 6

    Publish and test

Comment the keyword from a second account as soon as it is live. Tap the link from the DM.

Worked example: a content calendar template

A social media coach offers a 30-day content calendar as a Google Sheet. Sharing is set to "anyone with the link can view", and the DM tells people to make a copy, which is where most template deliveries go wrong.

Hey {first_name}, here's your 30-day content calendar: {link} Go to File, then Make a copy, so you can edit it. Day 1 takes ten minutes.

More ready-made wording is in the lead magnet templates.

Why are people not receiving or opening my lead magnet?

  • "Request access" errors. The file is private. Change sharing to anyone with the link.
  • The DM is in Requests. Meta delivers private replies to non-followers in the Requests folder.
  • People commented on an old post. Meta only allows a private reply within 7 days of a comment, so leave automation on from the start rather than adding it weeks later.
  • They expected a file, got a sign-in page. Course platforms often ask for an account. Say so in the DM, or host the first part somewhere open.
  • They asked twice and got one DM. Meta allows one private reply per comment. Their first DM has the link.

How do you know if the delivery is working?

  • Keyword comments per post. Tells you whether the post sold the magnet.
  • DMs sent versus keyword comments. These should match. A gap points to misspellings, a monthly limit or comments older than 7 days.
  • Link clicks versus DMs sent. A low rate means the first line is weak or people are not seeing the DM. Mention Requests.
  • Opens or downloads of the file. Most hosts report views. A click with no view means the page failed to load or asked for access.
  • Emails collected, if you ask for them, and how many still open your emails a month later.

Change one thing at a time, such as the keyword, the first line of the DM, or the magnet itself, and compare the next post with the last. For the full framework, see measuring Instagram DM conversions.

Tips for lead magnets that get used

  • Smaller is better. A one-page checklist gets opened, a 60-page ebook gets saved and forgotten.
  • Tell them where to start in the DM. "Page 3 first" gets more use than a link alone.
  • Ask for the email on your best magnet only: how to collect emails from Instagram.
  • Use the magnet to grow the account too: follow-gated DMs.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Meta added PDF attachments to the Instagram Direct API in December 2025. A link is still the more practical choice for a lead magnet: you can update the file after posting, track who opens it, and it behaves the same on every phone.

Ask when building a list is the goal and the magnet is valuable enough to trade for an email. Skip it when you want the post to travel. Asking adds a step, so fewer people reach the link.

Leave it on as long as the post gets comments. Good posts collect comments for weeks, and every one gets its DM. Meta only lets you reply to comments up to 7 days old, so an automation added late misses earlier commenters.

The name of the thing, in one word: GUIDE, CHECKLIST, TEMPLATE, RECIPE. People guess it without rereading the caption, and it is unlikely to appear in ordinary comments by accident.

Anywhere that opens quickly on a phone without a login: your own website, a public Google Doc or Sheet, or a published Notion page. Test it logged out before you post.
