How to auto reply to Instagram comments

Connect your Instagram professional account to a tool on Meta's official API, choose a post, set a keyword, then write two replies: a short public one under the comment and a private DM with the link. In ReplyRep, keyword DMs work on every plan and the public reply is on Lite and up. Meta allows one private reply per comment, within 7 days.

What does auto replying to Instagram comments actually mean?

There are two different replies people mean when they search this, and most good setups use both. The first is a public reply: a short line posted under the person's comment, visible to everyone reading the thread. The second is a private reply: a DM sent to the person who commented, which is where the link, the code or the freebie goes.

This guide covers the reply side: what to say in public, what to send in private, and how to keep both sounding human. If you only want the DM and need the exact keyword setup, the comment to DM setup guide goes deeper on matching and testing.

What do you need before you start?

  • An Instagram professional account. Meta's APIs only work with professional accounts, which can be a business or a creator account. Switching is free in the Instagram app settings.
  • No Facebook Page, if the tool uses Instagram Login. Meta's current docs say the Instagram API with Instagram Login does not require a linked Facebook Page. ReplyRep connects this way.
  • A tool on the official API. It should send you to Instagram to approve access, never ask for your password. Meta's Platform Terms forbid apps from collecting your login separately.
  • A post to automate and one thing to give. A link, a code, a PDF hosted somewhere, a price list. Auto replies with nothing to deliver are just noise.

How do you set up comment auto replies in ReplyRep?

  1. 1

    Connect your Instagram account

Sign in, choose Instagram, and approve access on Instagram's own screen. The whole setup takes about four minutes.

  2. 2

    Pick the post or reel

Choose a live post, or set the automation up on a post before you publish it (every plan) so the first comment is answered too.

  3. 3

    Set the keyword

One short word that matches what you are giving away: LINK, PRICE, RECIPE. Only comments containing it get a DM. Everything else is left for you to answer by hand.

  4. 4

    Write the private DM

Greet them, say what they are getting in one line, add the link. Keep it short enough to read in the notification preview.

  5. 5

    Turn on the public reply

Switch on Comment Auto Reply (Lite and up). ReplyRep words the public reply differently each time, so the thread reads like a person answering, not one sentence pasted 400 times.

  6. 6

    Test from a second account

Comment the keyword from another account. You should see the public reply under the comment and the DM arrive about three seconds later. Check the link opens.

The same principles hold in any tool: keyword in, one DM out, a varied public reply, a real test before you announce it. If a tool cannot vary its public replies, write several and rotate them yourself.

How should you word public replies so they do not look automated?

  • Point to the DM. The public reply's job is to tell the commenter, and everyone watching, that the answer is in their messages. "Sent, check your DMs" does that in four words.
  • Keep the link out of the thread. The link belongs in the private reply. Public links invite people to skip commenting, which is the signal that spreads the post.
  • Vary the wording. Five or six versions rotated across hundreds of comments look like a busy creator. One sentence repeated looks like a bot, and Meta's spam rules target repetitive, high-frequency behavior.
  • Match your voice. If you never use emoji in captions, do not start in auto replies.
  • Leave real questions for yourself. Comments without the keyword are often the ones that need a human. Answer them by hand, or let AI replies handle the inbox side.

Worked example: a recipe reel

A food creator posts a 30 second reel of a one-pan pasta and ends the caption with "Comment RECIPE and I'll send you the full recipe card." Here is the whole automation, ready to copy.

Recipe reel: public reply plus DMComment: RECIPE

Public reply

Sent, it's in your DMs

DM

Hey {first_name}, here's the one-pan pasta card: {link} Tip: salt the water harder than you think.

Add three or four alternatives for the public reply, such as "Check your messages", "Just sent it over" and "In your inbox now". Someone comments "RECIPE please", the reply appears under their comment, the DM lands, and the 40 people who comment "how long in the oven?" are left for you.

Should you auto reply to every comment or only keywords?

Keywords, almost always. A keyword is the commenter telling you they want a message. Everything else under a post is a mix of compliments, questions, tags of friends and the occasional complaint, and an automatic DM to each of those feels like a sales pitch nobody asked for.

Comment typeExampleBest handled by
Keyword request"RECIPE", "recipe please"Automatic DM plus public reply
Repeated question"price?", "do you ship to Canada?"A Global Trigger with a standard answer
Specific question"Can I use gluten-free pasta?"You, by hand, in the thread
Compliment or tag"@sam we need this"A like, or nothing
Complaint"My order never arrived"You, quickly, then move it to DMs

The split keeps automation doing the repetitive work while the replies that build trust still come from you. It also keeps every automatic DM wanted, which matters: Meta's Developer Policies warn that messaging experiences with excessive negative feedback can be limited.

Why is my Instagram comment auto reply not working?

  • The DM went to Requests. Meta sends a private reply to the Inbox if the commenter follows you and to the Requests folder if they do not. Tell people in the public reply or caption to check Requests.
  • The keyword did not match. A typo, a different word ("recipie", "the recipe") or a keyword set on a different post. Check the comment against the trigger.
  • The comment is older than 7 days. Meta only allows a private reply within 7 days of the comment, so turning automation on today will not reach last month's comments.
  • That comment was already answered. Meta allows one private reply per comment. If you replied by DM manually, or another tool did, there is nothing left to send.
  • Another tool is connected. Two automation apps on one account can race for the same comment. Disconnect the one you no longer use.
  • Your monthly allowance ran out. Check usage. Each plan has a monthly DM limit, and the dashboard shows where you are.

Tips for replying to comments at scale

  • Put the keyword in the first line of the caption and say it on screen, not only in the caption.
  • Use one keyword per post. Two keywords on one reel splits people and doubles your testing.
  • Pin a comment that repeats the instruction, so late scrollers see it.
  • For words people use everywhere, such as "shipping" or "price", set a Global Trigger once instead of adding it to every post. Free includes 5.
  • If a post might take off, read how to handle a viral Instagram post before it does.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Yes. ReplyRep's Free plan sends keyword DMs on posts, reels and stories with 2,000 DMs a month on one account. The automatic public reply under the comment is a paid feature, starting on Lite.

Yes, when it runs through Meta's official API. Meta documents private replies to comments for professional accounts, with limits: one message per comment, sent within 7 days. Tools that log in with your password are a different matter and break Instagram's terms.

You can, but it is rarely a good idea. Replying to everything sends DMs to people who were only saying something nice, and those messages feel unwanted. A keyword means everyone who gets a DM asked for one.

Meta sends a private reply to the main inbox if the commenter follows your account, and to the Requests folder if they do not. It is not an error. Mention Requests in your public reply so non-followers know where to look.

Only comments from the last 7 days. Meta allows a private reply within 7 days of the comment being made, so older comments cannot be answered by DM through the API. You can still reply to them publicly by hand.

ReplyRep does not automate Live comments. Meta's rules for Live are also stricter: a private reply to a Live comment can only be sent while the broadcast is still running.
