Who can you send automatic DMs to on Instagram?
Only people who reached out first. Meta is direct about it: "To send messages to a person on Messenger or Instagram, the conversation must be initiated by that person." Every legitimate automatic DM is a response to something the person did. There is no official way to message a list of strangers, and tools that claim to do it log in as you with your password, which Instagram's terms forbid.
That sounds limiting, but people interact with an active account all day. Each interaction below is a door Meta leaves open, and each one has its own rules.
| Trigger | What the person does | What you can send | ReplyRep feature |
|---|---|---|---|
| Post or reel comment | Comments on your post | One private reply, within 7 days of the comment | Comment to DM |
| Ad comment | Comments on your sponsored post | One private reply, within 7 days | Ad comment automation |
| Story reply | Replies to your story by message | Messages within the 24-hour window their message opens | Story reply automation |
| Story mention | Tags you in their story | A reply in the thread the mention creates | Story mention auto reply |
| Direct message | Messages you, or taps a conversation starter | Messages within the 24-hour window | Instagram auto DM |
What do you need before sending automatic DMs?
- A professional account. Meta's messaging APIs work with business and creator accounts only.
- A tool on the official API. You approve access on Instagram's own screen. Meta's Platform Terms say apps must not collect your login separately, so a tool asking for your password is a red flag.
- A reason for each message. A link, a code, an answer. Meta's Developer Policies ban spam, including "failing to deliver promised experiences". If the caption says the guide is in the DM, it has to be.
- A way to reach a human. Meta requires apps using Instagram messaging to have an escalation path to a human agent. In practice: you still read your inbox.
How do you set up automatic DMs in ReplyRep?
- 1
Connect your professional account
Approve access on Instagram's screen. ReplyRep uses Instagram Login, so no Facebook Page is needed. Setup takes about four minutes.
- 2
Choose where the DM starts
A specific post or reel, your stories, or anywhere on the account. Post and story automation is on every plan.
- 3
Set the trigger word
The word that fires the DM: GUIDE on a post, LINK on a story, "price" anywhere. Account-wide words are Global Triggers, which answer on every post, story and DM.
- 4
Write the message
First name, one line on what they get, the link. If you need more than one message, ask a question so they reply, which opens the conversation for more.
- 5
Add the openers for people who message you
Set up to four Conversation Starters, tappable prompts shown when someone opens your inbox, so a first message is one tap.
- 6
Test each trigger from another account
Comment, reply to a story and send a DM from a second account. Check each message arrives and every link opens.
Worked example: a skincare brand covering every trigger
A small skincare brand wants every "how much?" answered, wherever it is asked. It sets one Global Trigger for PRICE, a post keyword for its launch reel, and a thank-you for story mentions.
Public reply
Sent you the details
DM
Hi {first_name}, here's the new serum: {link} Want to know which skin type it suits best? Just reply and ask.
DM
Hi {first_name}, all our prices are on one page: {link} Shipping is on the same page, at the bottom.
DM
You just made our day, {first_name}. Thanks for the tag. Here's 10% off your next order: {code}
The launch DM ends with a question on purpose. If the person replies, Meta's 24-hour window opens and the brand can keep talking. If they do not, the one private reply is all that goes out, which is the rule.

Which automatic DM should you start with?
Start with the trigger that matches the job, then add others once the first is working. Each guide below goes deep on one of them.
| Your goal | Start with | Read next |
|---|---|---|
| Send a link from a post or reel | Comment keyword | Set up comment to DM |
| Answer drops and offers in stories | Story reply keyword | Automate story replies |
| Build an email list | Comment keyword with email capture | Collect emails from Instagram |
| Grow followers | Comment keyword with a follow gate | Follow-gated DMs |
| Stop typing the same answer | Global Trigger | Global keyword triggers |
What can you not automate in Instagram DMs?
- Cold DMs. Meta requires the person to start the conversation. No official tool can message someone who has not interacted with you.
- Broadcasts to followers. For the same reason, there is no official "message all followers" button.
- Messages long after the conversation. Outside the 24-hour window, Meta's Human Agent tag lets a person, not automation, reply within 7 days. Meta also says one-time notifications, sponsored messages and news messaging are not available for the Instagram Messaging API.
- Repeated DMs from one comment. One private reply per comment, then wait for the person to reply.
- Live comments, in ReplyRep. Meta only allows private replies to Live comments during the broadcast, and ReplyRep does not automate Live.
Why are my automatic DMs not being delivered?
- They are in Requests. Meta puts new conversations from non-followers in the Requests folder, and private replies to non-followers land there too. Tell people to check it.
- The trigger did not fire. The word was misspelled, was on a different post, or was a GIF or sticker story reply, which Meta's story reply webhook does not support.
- The window had closed. Comments can get one private reply within 7 days. Other messages must go out within 24 hours of the person's last message.
- You already sent the one reply. After the private reply to a comment, another message needs the person to respond first.
- The story mention was from a private account that does not follow you. Meta only passes those on if the private account follows you.
Tips for automatic DMs people actually open
- Lead with what they asked for. The notification preview shows the first line, so make it the answer.
- One link per message. Two links split the click and make the message look like an ad.
- End with a question when you want a conversation. A reply keeps the thread open for 24 hours.
- Say in the caption that the link arrives by DM, so nobody is surprised by a message.
- For copy that gets a reply, see Instagram DM copy that converts. For real examples, see Instagram auto DM examples.
