How do automated Instagram story replies work?
When someone replies to your story, Instagram turns the reply into a DM to you. Meta passes it to your automation tool as a message, marked as a reply to that story. The tool checks it for your keyword and answers in the same thread.
That makes story replies different from comments in a useful way. A comment earns one private reply. A story reply is a message the person sent you, and Meta's standard messaging window after a person's message is 24 hours. So you can send the link, ask a question and keep talking, as long as it is within 24 hours of their last message.
| Story reply | Story mention | Post comment | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What the person does | Replies to your story by message | Tags you in their own story | Comments on your post |
| What Meta passes on | A message, marked as a story reply | A message with the mention | A comment |
| What you can send | Messages within 24 hours of theirs | Messages within 24 hours of theirs | One private reply within 7 days |
| Known gaps | GIF and sticker replies are not supported | Private accounts only if they follow you | None for keyword comments |
What do you need before you start?
- An Instagram professional account connected through the official API. ReplyRep uses Instagram Login, so no Facebook Page.
- Message replies allowed on your stories, in Instagram's story settings. If people cannot reply, there is nothing to automate.
- A reason to reply: a link, a code, a drop, a booking slot.
- A story that says the keyword out loud and in text.
How do you automate story replies in ReplyRep?
- 1
Connect Instagram
Approve access on Instagram's screen. Setup takes about four minutes.
- 2
Create a story automation
Story reply automation is on every plan. Choose your stories as the trigger instead of a post.
- 3
Set the keyword
Short and typed easily into the reply box: LINK, DROP, CODE, BOOK.
- 4
Write the DM
The story disappears, so the DM has to stand alone. Say what the story was about, then the link.
- 5
Add a mention thank-you
Optional: set an automatic reply for story mentions, so anyone who tags you gets a thanks, a code or a link back. More on this below.
- 6
Test from another account
Post the story, reply with the keyword from a second account, and check the answer arrives. Then try a reply without the keyword: it should be left for you.
The same setup holds in any tool. The one thing that differs between tools is whether a story keyword applies to all your stories or one at a time, so check before you post a run of stories with different offers. For words you want answered everywhere, including stories, a Global Trigger works across the whole account.
What can you use automated story replies for?
| Play | Example keyword | What the DM sends |
|---|---|---|
| Product drop or restock | DROP | The product link, and a question about size or color |
| Flash discount | CODE | The code and a link that applies it |
| Booking slots | BOOK | The booking page for this week's openings |
| Waitlist | LIST | A confirmation, and an email ask if you collect them |
| Behind the scenes freebie | NOTES | The notes, template or recipe from the story |
| Event or live session reminder | REMIND | The date, time and link to add it to a calendar |
Stories are seen mostly by people who already follow you, and a story reply is a conversation they started, so your answer arrives in a thread they opened themselves. That makes stories the most dependable place to deliver something to your existing audience, while reels do the work of reaching new people.
How do automatic replies to story mentions work?
A story mention is different from a story reply: someone tags your account in their own story. Meta notifies your account and passes the mention to your tool, which can reply in the thread. Customers who post your product are the obvious audience. A thank-you with a discount code rewards the tag and gives them a reason to post the next one.
Meta's limits are worth knowing. Mentions only come through from public accounts, or from private accounts that follow you, and apps must not store the story media. See story mention auto replies for the setup.
Worked example: a restock drop in stories
A clothing brand restocks a sold-out jacket and announces it in a three-frame story: the jacket, the sizes back, "Reply DROP for the link."
DM
Hey {first_name}, the jacket is back: {link} Mediums went first last time. Want me to tell you which sizes are left?
The DM ends with a question. If they answer, the 24-hour window resets from their reply, and the brand can answer about sizes by hand or with AI replies. More examples are in the story reply templates.

Why is my story reply automation not working?
- They replied with a GIF or sticker. Meta's documentation says the story reply webhook does not support GIF or sticker replies. Ask for a typed keyword.
- They used a quick emoji reaction. A reaction is not a typed reply with your keyword. Ask people to type the word.
- Replies are switched off. Check your story settings allow message replies.
- The keyword is on a different story. If your tool sets keywords per story, a new story needs its own.
- A mention did not trigger. Meta only passes on story mentions from public accounts, or from private accounts that follow you.
- The follow up never sent. Further messages must go out within 24 hours of the person's last message.
Should you use one keyword across all your stories?
Use one keyword per offer, not per story. If this week's stories all push the same drop, DROP on every frame keeps it simple. If Monday is a drop and Wednesday is a booking slot, give them different words, DROP and BOOK, so a late reply to Monday's story does not get Wednesday's link. Retire old keywords when the offer ends, or point them at something still live, because people reply to stories they saw hours earlier.
Tips for story replies people send
- Put the keyword on the last frame, big. People reply from the frame they are on.
- Use a question sticker or poll for engagement, and a keyword reply for links. Keep each to its job.
- Stories last 24 hours, so time the drop for when your audience is online.
- Mix stories with posts: stories reach your followers, reels reach strangers. Compare with how to send automatic DMs on Instagram.
