How does the Instagram Graph API work?
You log in with Instagram (or Facebook) and approve the permissions an app asks for. Meta then gives the app access to your professional account through its API, and sends it webhooks when something happens, such as a new comment or DM. An app that serves accounts its developer doesn't own needs Meta's Advanced Access, which requires App Review and Business Verification.
What are the two setups?
| Instagram API with Instagram Login | Instagram API with Facebook Login | |
|---|---|---|
| Facebook Page | Not required | Required |
| Messaging | Supported | Supported through Messenger Platform |
| Account type | Professional (business or creator) | Professional (business or creator) |
Why does the official API matter for DM automation?
Instagram's Terms of Use forbid accessing or collecting information in an automated way without permission, and forbid collecting other users' passwords. Meta's Platform Terms say apps must not separately request a user's login credentials. Tools that ask for your password work outside all of that. The official API also enforces the rules that keep automation fair: the person must message first, one private reply per comment, and published rate limits.
How does ReplyRep use the Instagram Graph API?
ReplyRep is a Meta Business Partner built on the official API. You connect with Meta's login, it never asks for your password, and setup takes about four minutes. See automatic Instagram DMs, how ReplyRep keeps your account safe and the official API vs password tools.
