Can you really automate Instagram DMs for free?
Yes. Meta's documentation does not list a fee for sending private replies or DMs through the Instagram API, so the cost of automation is whatever the tool charges. Several tools have a free tier. The questions that matter are how many DMs it allows, which features it holds back, and whether it connects the safe way.
ReplyRep's free Instagram auto DM plan is free forever, not a trial. Here is exactly what it includes next to the cheapest paid plan, Lite at $10 a month, read straight from the pricing table.

The free plan covers the core job: someone comments or replies with your keyword, they get your DM with the link. What it leaves out are the extras that turn a reply into growth or a list (public replies, follow gates, email capture, follow ups) and the queue that protects you on a viral night.
Why should you avoid free tools that ask for your password?
Some free "auto DM" tools work by logging in as you: you type your Instagram username and password into their site and a script uses your account. Instagram's Terms of Use forbid accessing Instagram "in an automated way without our express permission", and forbid collecting other users' login credentials. Meta's Platform Terms say apps "must not separately request or collect a Meta user's login credentials".
A free tool on the official API never sees your password. You approve access on Instagram's own screen, the tool gets a token, and you can revoke it from Instagram's settings. If a free tool cannot work that way, the price is your account's safety. More in official Instagram API versus password tools.
What do you need to start for free?
- An Instagram professional account. Switching from personal to creator or business is free in the Instagram app.
- No Facebook Page. Meta's Instagram API with Instagram Login works without one.
- An email address to sign up. ReplyRep's free plan needs no card.
- One post where people would want something: a link, a guide, a price.
How do you set up free Instagram DM automation in ReplyRep?
- 1
Create a free account
Sign up with your email. You land on the free plan automatically.
- 2
Connect Instagram
Approve access on Instagram's screen. The whole setup takes about four minutes.
- 3
Automate one post
Choose a post or reel, add a keyword, write the DM with your link. Keywords on a single post are unlimited on every plan.
- 4
Add account-wide keywords
Use your 5 free Global Triggers for the questions you get everywhere: "price", "shipping", "link". They answer on every post, story and DM.
- 5
Set up Conversation Starters
Up to four tappable prompts for people who open your inbox, so a first message takes one tap.
- 6
Test, then post
Comment the keyword from a second account, check the DM and the link, then tell your audience the keyword.
Worked example: a free plan doing real work
A fitness coach posts three reels a week, each with a free workout. Every reel gets a keyword, and two Global Triggers cover the questions that come up everywhere.
DM
Hey {first_name}, here's the 4-week plan: {link} Start with week 1 even if it feels easy. It gets harder.
DM
Hi {first_name}, everything about 1:1 coaching is here: {link} Questions? Reply here and I'll answer myself.
Say each reel brings 300 keyword comments. Twelve reels a month is 3,600 DMs, which is over the free plan's 2,000. That is the usual moment to upgrade: when the free allowance runs out because it is working, not before.
When is it worth paying?
- You hit 2,000 DMs a month. Lite is $10 for 10,000, and Boost is $25 for 40,000.
- You want followers from your link posts. Follow-Gated DMs are paid. See how to grow followers with follow-gated DMs.
- You want the emails. The Email Collector is paid. See how to collect emails from Instagram.
- A post might go viral. The Excess DM Queue and SendBack, which hold and recover DMs over Meta's limit, are paid.
- You run more than one account, or want no ReplyRep branding on messages. Boost covers 3 accounts and removes the branding.

What should you check in any free Instagram automation plan?
Free plans vary a lot between tools, and the limits that matter are not always the headline. Before you build automations on one, check these.
- How it connects. Instagram's own approval screen, never a password field.
- The DM cap. A monthly number, a contact cap, or both. Contact caps count people, so a growing account hits them even if each person gets one DM.
- Which triggers are free. Posts only, or reels, stories and DMs too.
- What happens at the cap. Whether automations pause or keep going, and whether you are told.
- Branding. Whether the tool adds its name to your messages.
- Data you keep. How long contacts and history are stored, and whether you can export them.
- The upgrade path. The price of the first paid plan, so a good month does not become an expensive one.
For ReplyRep, the answers are on the pricing page: Instagram Login, 2,000 DMs a month, posts, reels and stories included, ReplyRep branding on Free and Lite, 30 days of data, and Lite at $10 a month as the next step.
Why is my free automation not sending?
- The monthly allowance is used. The dashboard shows usage. The count resets each month.
- The DM is in Requests. Meta delivers to Requests when the person does not follow you.
- The comment is over 7 days old. Meta only allows a private reply within 7 days of a comment.
- It was already answered. Meta allows one private reply per comment, so a manual DM or another tool may have used it.
- You expected a public reply. Comment Auto Reply is a paid feature, so on the free plan the DM goes out but nothing is posted under the comment.
Tips to get the most from a free plan
- Save Global Triggers for words people use on every post. Post-specific keywords are unlimited, so use those for everything else.
- Put the link in the first DM. Without a paid follow up, there is no second message unless they reply.
- Ask a question at the end of the DM. If they reply, you can keep talking for 24 hours.
- Compare costs before you switch tools: the Instagram DM tool cost calculator does the sums.
