Instagram auto reply: how to set it up for comments, DMs and stories

Instagram auto reply means answering comments, DMs or story replies without typing each one. Instagram's own tools give business and creator accounts saved replies you insert by hand. Fully automatic replies need a tool on Meta's official API, like ReplyRep, which DMs everyone who comments a keyword about three seconds later and answers common DM questions for you.

What is Instagram auto reply?

"Instagram auto reply" covers three different things, and it helps to know which one you need before you set anything up:

  • Reply shortcuts. Stored answers you insert while typing. Faster than typing, but a person still has to open each message and send it. This is what Instagram offers in the app.
  • Comment auto reply. When someone comments a keyword under a post, reel or ad, they automatically get a DM, and optionally a public reply under their comment. This needs a tool on Meta's API.
  • DM and story auto reply. When someone messages you, replies to your story or mentions you, an answer goes out automatically. Also an API tool.

If you get a handful of messages a day, shortcuts may be enough. If you post content that asks people to comment, or you get the same questions over and over, you want real automation. For the bigger picture of how it all works, start with our complete guide to Instagram DM automation.

Does Instagram have a built-in auto reply?

Instagram gives professional accounts some built-in help with replies, mainly saved replies: answers you store once and drop into a conversation instead of retyping them. Depending on account type, region and app version, Instagram and Meta's business tools have also offered things like frequently asked question prompts in the inbox and automatic responses to new messages. Names, menus and availability change often, so check the business or creator tools section of your own Instagram settings rather than trusting a screenshot from an old blog post.

What the built-in tools do not do is the thing most people mean by Instagram auto reply: read every comment on a post, spot a keyword and send that person a DM with a link. That runs on Meta's developer platform, through a feature Meta calls private replies, and you use it through an approved third-party app.

Saved replies are still worth setting up even if you automate. They are the fastest way for a person to answer the conversations automation hands over: the refund question, the custom order, the collaboration request. Keep five to ten of them for your most common manual answers, and keep their wording consistent with your automated DMs so people do not notice the switch from tool to human.

Meta's developer platform also offers two inbox features that apps can set for you. Ice breakers show up to four frequently asked questions that someone can tap to start a conversation; Meta notes they are not available on desktop. A persistent menu keeps a set of buttons visible in the conversation, and Meta suggests five items at most. In ReplyRep these are Conversation Starters and Smart Menu.

Most accounts end up using both: automation for the predictable (the link, the price, the code, the thank-you) and saved replies for the conversations a person handles. That split also matches Meta's requirement that automated Instagram messaging must offer a path to a human.

Which setup fits your account?

Your accountWhat you get askedWhat to use
Small business, a few DMs a dayOpening hours, prices, "are you open?"Saved replies, plus one or two DM keywords for the most common questions
Creator posting reels with a call to action"Link?", "Send it", the keywordComment auto reply on every post with an offer
Online storePrice, sizes, shipping, discount codesComment auto reply on product posts, DM keywords for shipping, story mention thank-yous
Coach or service business"How do I book?", "How much?"Comment and DM keywords that send the booking link, a person for the sales conversation
Brand running ads"How much?" under sponsored postsAd comment automation, so paid attention gets an answer

A useful test: open your last 50 DMs and comments and count how many asked something you have answered before. If it is more than a handful, those are your first automations. Everything else stays with a person. Industry-specific setups are on the pages for creators, for ecommerce brands and for coaches.

How do you set up Instagram auto reply for comments?

Comment auto reply is the most useful kind, because it turns a comment into a conversation. Here is the setup in ReplyRep, which takes about four minutes.

  1. 1

    Use a professional account

Switch to a creator or business account in Instagram settings. No Facebook Page is needed.

  2. 2

    Connect through Instagram's login

Sign up for ReplyRep and approve access on Instagram's own screen. Never type your password into a third-party form.

  3. 3

    Choose the post

Pick a post or reel that is live, or one you are about to publish. You can automate it before it goes out.

  4. 4

    Set the keyword

One short word, such as RECIPE. Comments without it are left alone, so normal conversation stays normal.

  5. 5

    Write the DM

Deliver what you promised in the first line, add the link, end with a short question.

  6. 6

    Add a public reply

Optional (Lite and up): a short reply under the comment like "Sent, check your DMs", worded differently each time so the thread does not look robotic.

  7. 7

    Test from a second account

Comment the keyword and check the DM arrives, the link opens and the public reply appears.

Meta allows one private reply per comment, sent within 7 days of the comment, and up to 750 per hour per account for posts and reels. If the person answers your DM, you can keep talking for 24 hours from their reply. For more detail see how to auto reply to Instagram comments and the comment auto reply feature.

How do you auto reply to Instagram DMs and story replies?

Messages people send you directly are covered by Meta's standard messaging window: once they message you, a tool can reply inside 24 hours. That gives you several ways to answer automatically:

  • DM keywords. Someone types PRICE, SHIPPING or BOOK and gets the answer. In ReplyRep, account-wide global keyword triggers work in DMs and on every post at once.
  • Story replies. Someone replies "link?" to your story and gets the link, the same way a comment would. See story reply automation.
  • Story mentions. Someone tags you in their story and gets a thank-you, a code or a link back. Meta only sends these for public accounts, or private accounts that follow you.
  • Starter prompts and menus. Up to four tappable prompts when someone opens your inbox, and a menu of up to four buttons inside the thread.
  • AI replies. For questions no keyword covers, an AI auto reply trained on your voice and offers answers the way you would.

What about comments that are not keywords?

Keyword automation deliberately ignores everything else, so "love this" and "where is this filmed?" stay with you. That is usually what you want: a bot answering compliments reads as spam. For real questions without a keyword, you have two options. Add an account-wide keyword for the questions you get every week, such as SHIPPING or SIZES, or let an AI reply handle questions in the DMs while you answer public comments yourself. Either way, read the comments at least once a day. Your replies are part of what makes the post look alive.

What are Instagram's rules for auto replies?

SituationWhat you can send
Someone comments on a post, reel or adOne private reply, within 7 days of the comment. More only after they answer, within 24 hours of their answer.
Someone comments on a LiveA private reply only while the broadcast is live.
Someone messages you or replies to your storyReplies within 24 hours of their message (up to 7 days after a first message from a Click-to-Direct ad).
Someone has never interacted with youNothing. Meta requires the person to start the conversation.
Volume750 private replies per hour per account for post and reel comments.

Beyond the mechanics, Meta's policies require opt-in, ban spam and failing to deliver what you promised, require a path to a human, and require disclosure of automation where the law asks for it. Read Instagram DM limits and is Instagram DM automation allowed for the full picture.

How do you write an auto reply people actually answer?

  • Lead with what they asked for. The link or the answer goes in the first line, not after a greeting.
  • Keep it to three short lines. People read DMs on their phones between other things.
  • One link. Two links split attention. Send the second thing after they reply.
  • End with a question you want answered. It opens the conversation and tells you what to send next.
  • Sound like you. If you write in lowercase with emoji on your posts, do it in the DM too.
  • Vary public replies. Ten identical "Sent" replies under a post look like a bot. Rotate a few versions.

Here is the difference in practice. A weak auto reply reads: "Hi there, thanks so much for your comment, we really appreciate your support. Please find the link below." A strong one reads: "Here's the recipe: [link]. Are you making it this week or saving it?" The second is shorter, delivers in the first line and asks a question that is easy to answer. That answer matters: Meta only lets you send more after the person replies, so a reply-worthy question is what keeps the conversation open.

How fast should an auto reply be?

Fast enough that the person is still on Instagram. Someone who comments a keyword is usually still scrolling the same session, and a DM that arrives while they are there gets opened. One that arrives hours later competes with everything else in their inbox. ReplyRep sends the DM about three seconds after the comment. On a viral post the hourly limit can stretch that out, which is why queueing matters: a late DM is better than none, and the order should be kept so the earliest commenters are answered first.

Can you set up Instagram auto reply for free?

Yes. Instagram's saved replies cost nothing, and ReplyRep's Free plan gives you 2,000 automated DMs a month on 1 account with post, reel and story triggers and 5 account-wide keywords. What you add by upgrading to Lite at $10 a month is the public reply under the comment, follow-gated DMs, email capture, follow ups and the queue for posts that pass Meta's hourly limit. Replies sent through Meta's official API follow the rules Meta wrote for automation. Accounts get into trouble with password-based bots, spammy behavior or messages people did not ask for. Only reply to people who interacted first and deliver what you promised.

Yes. Since Meta's Instagram API with Instagram Login, a linked Facebook Page is not required for automation. You need an Instagram professional account, either business or creator, which you can switch to for free in Instagram settings.
